Door Hardware repair

I'm having a problem with the Driver door of my '89 300TD.
There are two detents when opening the door...these are set by the steel strip which moves in and out of the door. A pin allows this to pivot on a bracket spot welded to the door jamb.
The bracket on this door is loose...maybe cracked, resulting in a sharp cracking sound when opening the door. Lacking a spot welder, I'm thinking I could bolt a new bracket using 4 countersunk type screws If I can find the part...it appears to be spot welded in 4 places.....anybody got some ideas of repairing this?

what I tried didn't work

On my 300TD, the same thing happened. I thought that changing the door check strap would help, but it didn't.

So I tried JB-weld. I took the pin out and put a string through (to tension it) then pushed the epoxy behind the pin holder, and then built up a fillet on the outside.

I thought that I had it fixed- for about 6 weeks. But then it cracked, I think along the paint - epoxy interface.

I was thinking about taking some kind of hardware store U-shaped bolt, drilling holes on either side of the pin holder and inserting the bolt from behind, fastening it with regular nuts.

For sure, not an elegent solution, but the clacking was irritating to me also.

Hopefully someone else has some proven solution (that doesn't involve welding).

weld the mount

I had the same problem on my 240d. I posted a thread about it. I had a neighbor 'pool weld' it through a couple of holes we drilled. I also have the part number at home , i'm at work now. Their is not enough 'bracket' to drill and tap. WARNING; their are vacuum lines and electrical wires behind the bracket which will melt! Disconnect them and pull them clear of the area. Email me if you need more info. Use the search try 'door strap mount'.

Thanks for the replies,

My earlier search on 'Door' gave too many replies. 'Door Strap' works better. I removed the plastic panel left of the brake pedal and was able to see the bracket move around using a small mirror...it looks cracked as well as just lose. I hate to mess up my paint by welding..thought of welding a new bracket to a
steel plate and using the screw method in the jam (screws thru the plate, If one can get their hand in there to place the nuts). I guess I'll order one and take a look at it.

Regards all,

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. My solution was to drill and tap the bracket spotweld area. I believe only two of the screws took hold. There is lots of clearance for screws, they don't have to be flush.
