Cruising speeds for 240D

When on the highway I cruise at about 70 MPH to keep up with traffic. Ive heard some say this is hard on engines that weren't meant to do this (notably a guy down the road who said he blew is engine doing 80, although I think his engine dying was due to poor maintenance..) Does cruising at this speed significantly shorten engine life or is it perfectly acceptable to do this?

It's my understanding that upper RPM ranges on diesels is perfectly safe. That's why they have no redline on the tach. I cruise at at least 75, sometimes I'll push it to 85-90 to get past people or to piss someone off who's trying to pass the slow, old diesel. That will get her up and over 4000 RPM.
