found 300td at Salvation Army

Today I had to make a stop on my way home so I went a different route. I never go by the Salvation Army except once a year to drop old clothes off but this way took me right by there. I saw an old 300td as I passed and it was sitting with several old cars. I stopped to go back by and noticed it was a donated car. It had a small For Sale sign on it. I stopped and checked it out. Heres the skinny-

1980 300td wagon. runs great. Good tires. Needs shut down valve. $400.

I am interested in another project so I am gonna go by this Saturday to check her out closer. It had a bad faded repaint. Lots of overspray. Saggy rear. Broken driver seat and a rusty driver side fender. It looked pretty solid underneath and everywhere else though. silver with black interior. Radio is also ripped out. I was able to get under the hood and it looked pretty complete. Battery did not look to old and oil seepage was minimal. What yall think? Thanks guys!

later,

Joe, I think you have more cars than I do!

The sagging rear is a problem with the self-leveling -- could be a leak, could be dead $300 each struts. Sagging drivers seat could also be just set all the way down, but you could just switch the springs with the passenger side or pull a set at the local you-pull-it lot.

Fender I would just replace, a new one is only $125, used about $100, you are going to need to repaint anyway, so who cares what color?

Sounds like a good deal, but be prepared to do brakes, too -- they usually get "cheated" on when the paint gets bad.

what is the shut down valve? Does it cut the car off when you turn the key? Thanks

yeah the shut off valve is this little round looking thing on the back of the injection pump. next to the oil filter...
I just replaced mine on Wednesday it was a very easy job. if you need one of those do not go to the dealer for the part they want over $100 including taxes.
I got mine at performancemotorcars.com for that car it will be $33.38 free shipping if you spend more than $50 not bad...

or fastlane has it for $44 + shipping look under diesel injection catagory at both sites...
If that part is bad you may need to shut the car off manualy with a stop lever on the upper side of the engine very annoying belive me....
$400 dont sound like a bad price especially if your gonna have to put some $$$ into it

oh word to the wise before you buy it check the exaust for holes the pipes on that car are very expensive even online.
your looking at $443.94 at the cheapest .
you would have to get the entire system these after market pipes wont fit original benz parts, I found out; they make the center pipe longer and the header pipe shorter.

Are those self-leveling rear suspensions on those the same type of thing in the old 400SEL 6.3? I found a really nice on Ebay that had the air suspension all rebuilt. Sounds like that type of stuff is really a pain.

The suspension on the old 6.3s was, as you mentioned, a air suspension. The self leveling sys. on these cars is via hydro pneumatic shocks and special hyd. fluid.
