Thoughts on a '78 240D

Came across an add for a 1978 240D for sale. Since it only has 108K miles and asking price is $4250 I am assuming it is in very good shape. Any thoughts on the model year of 240D, the low miles, and the price?

ps...It also has a 4speed manual.

If the age and price of the vehicle scares away enough potential customers this person may be willing to negotiate.

That price seems a little too high. Maybe somewhere around $2000 would be a realistic price. The low miles won't really mean anything if it wasn't well maintained. Have it inspected if it is something you think you might want. The 4 speed is something that would make it worth while getting, since it will have a little more pep than the automatic would have. Also if it has maintenance records, it might be worth getting.

I also checked out a '79 240D the other night. Currently has 220K with maintenance records stamped in the book up to 190K. The second owner did not keep track and the current owner (3rd) I can tell has been maintaining it. The car is straight, interior is good, it is an auto with the a/c not working (of course) and has manual windows (one less thing to fix). He wants 2K or offer for it? Its downside is the broken a/c, cracked windshield, and the lights for the speedo don't work. what would be a fair offer on this?

Oh, by the way, the car runs nice!

$1500 tops is what I would personally pay for that particular car. A new windshield is going to cost several hundered, and the A/C might be a little spendy to repair also. Also make sure that it has the manual climate control, if it has the automatic climate control, then make sure that it works proporly. These can also spendy to repair.

That's very little mileage on a 78'. I bet alot of these seals will need replacing and rubber all over. A car that sat is sometimes worse than one that's been driven..$0.02

Someone 'enlighten' me on the automatic climate control vs. manual as I am not familiar with the controls on these cars. The '79 240D I am looking at has turn knobs for right and left vents and the a/c knob top middle. I would assume this is manual, correct? What is an automatic climate control do "automatically"?

Thanks for hanging in there with me as I learn this stuff!!

p.s. I did test drive this car and it drives very well except for the fact that a glacier could beat this thing on a freeway on ramp...Maybe perfect vehicle for my upcoming teenager

Pdxman,

For $4000 you can buy a good Turbo Diesel. With a turbo you will be able to beat that glacier. I consider the non turbos obsolete because of their low power. I still have a few non turbo MBs, but I don't drive them since I got my Turbos.

PDXMAN, I think the way you can tell the two apart is the " Temperature wheel" on the dash.. which has blue for cold and red for heat.... and you can only see part of it at a time... recessed into the panel...as compared to the flat temp controls on the manual... which you can see completely...and is a regular knob.... the hidden wheel is the one to avoid in my opinion..

Well, the 79 240 did have manual climate controls and still think it's in overall good shape for 220k miles and 23 years old. so I made an offer that we went back and forth on and an came out at $1500 for him and his car to me. I think it will make a pretty good commuter for me. buffed out the paint today and it looks much better. I'll try adding some additive for cleaning the injectors to see if it peps this thing up a bit.

Sounds like a good deal to me. The manual climate control is a good thing to have on these cars. I only wish that my 300CD had them. Be prepaired to put some money into it, because I am sure you will run across something that needs to be replaced. I put around $600 into my 300CD when I first got it, and I am putting another $1000 into it to get the tourque converter replaced and some other stuff done with the transmission. If the paint is still in good shape, make sure you wax it often to help preserve the paint. As for aditives, I would suggest running a can of Lubro Moly diesel purge. Another thing I would suggest doing is getting the oil changed and change the fluids if they look dirty. When changing the oil, make sure to use a high quality German filter.

pdxman,

i live in Portland and see that you're looking for a MB Diesel- I have seen in the Oregonian Newspaper , that there is a 82 300SD for sale in good shape.. for something like.. $2900/ofr.. u might want to check it out! Also, I have seen some in the Auto Trader (they should have released the new Sept. 6 edition today)... I'll keep my eye out for ya
I agree with the other folks, that you should be able to find something well under $3k that is a great car.. $4k for that 78 240d is *waay* too much, I'd try haggling- even show the kelley blue book value statement to the owner.. it should be less than 4k...
Good luck on your search!,

Thanks MILES81_240D. I had called on that one but wasn't totally interested and no physical records to back up the maintenance on it. I did find this one though...'79 240D/220K/most records from earliest owners/pretty decent shape/$1500. I've been driving it to work and workin great except I think even the acceleration is slower than the normal slow. Working on that issue in other posts. Bought new fuel/vacume lines to swap out this week. Can't hurt.
