ATF Quantity?

Can someone give me the proper specs. for tranny fluid quantity in the 79 SD? The Haynes manual calls for 6.5 quarts. I'm at 6 quarts and am 1/2 inch over the max. mark on the stick. This manual does not differentiate between the transmissions on the 116 and the 124.
I replaced the old oil (pan and torque converter) and filter. Replaced with Mobil 1 synthetic. Also replaced differential oil with Mobil 1. Noticeably smoother.
Between the tranny fluid, diff. fluid and performing a purge in the fuel/pump/injector system, this is one quick-fast-smooth barge.

I have a '79 and '80 300SD and they both take 6 quarts of ATF when everything is drained completely. To drain completely you have to drain the torque converter and remove the transmission pan. If pan is not removed slightly less than 6 quarts will fill the transmission.

If you are over the full line on the dip stick with the transmission hot, you should remove some of the oil by cracking the bolt open that holds the dip stick tube to the pan and let some ATF trickle out.

Thanks. I have a hand pump and pulled out about 1 pint to bring the level down.
