82 300sd engine removal?
have any of you ever removed engine in 123 or126 without the transmission? Or is it much easier to pull eng and trans?
How long has it taken ya'll to do an engine swap? Also what would ya reseal while engine is out? thanks Hillbilly |

I pulled the engine (with manual tranny) out of my '80' 240d a couple of months ago using the Haynes manual. Yours will be a little tighter but if you can get your hands on one of those spreader bars which allows you "tilt' as you lift, you'll have no problem . This was the first time I ever pulled an engine and it remains to be seen how well I do putting it back in. I did the head, ground valves, new exhaust valve guides, and seals. All pretty straight forward. Good Luck |
When I rebuilt the engine in the 240 I did not pull the tranny with the engine and there was not much too it, in my opinion. Nothing really hard at all about it. I would suggest going ahead and cleaning/painting the engine compartment while you have it out and replacing the front tranny seal.

I pulled my engine and transmission out of my 82 SD a couple of years ago and it wasn't that bad. I think it would be alot easier to pull both than to try and take just the engine out.

I pulled the one from my parts car with the transmission still attached. Went pretty smooth, but it took 2 people to get it completely out, the engine hoist did not quite go high enough, so I had to stand in the engine compartment and tip the tranny up while someone else pulled the whole thing straight back.
