300D.....keep or sell?...opinions wanted
A relative of mine has a 1992 300D(my former car) that has about 289K...and some issues.......1.evap core....2. front end work(including shocks)...3.power steering pump leaking badly....her tech has quoted $3200 to fix all three items....but told her she might consider a new car before putting the money in this car
..a few more facts here....she has hardly put any money into the car since she bought it from me 6 years ago...except oil changes etc........the interior is in pristine condition..all electrical items work....the paint(specifically the hood) is starting to lose its clear coat after 11 years in the Texas sun.. car does run very good though(engine,trans)...I drove it a few months ago and I am pretty picky... :-) She is very adamate about liking the diesel thing....my suggestion to her was to get a 1996-97 E300D My reasoning is...I think her current car is worth about 4000-4500(fixed)....she could probably sell it for 2K as is(probably $1000 at the MB dealer as a trade in)...so I deem the repair not worthwhile opinions??? I don't know the precise answer to your question but it may help reading my post "the naked truth."

Well, if it has been serviced well and not abused, then I'd suspect
that diesel should continue humming. 1992 seemed to be a bad year for some MBZ. I wonder if it was so for the 300D? I am sure you can get it fixed for alot less. I know that my mechanic could do it for alot less. If you plan to keep it, get someone more reasonable to fix it For $2K, I bet a member around your neck of the woods may buy it and DIY . anyway that's my shot from the hip.

I say get some more quotes and ask us again.
Remeber, while you might be able to just buy another used car, at least you know the history of this car's treatment and it seems to have been treated well. Frank.

Can be done for a lot less
Greetings Warren,
Your quote of course probably figures in labor at $85 an hour or more with most likely less that $500 in parts. The Evaporator core can be gotten used from European Connections for less than $100 as well as the power steering pump, and the rest of the front-end parts I'd buy new and still have considerably less than your quote stuck in the car and do the work myself. I think I;d go that route if everything else you say about this car is on par. If the engine and tranny are running strong and being maintained and the body and interior are in good to great condition, than trading out to another vehicle would be out of the question for me. Buying an unknown used vehicle from a dealer will just be another hole to throw money down. With what you have, you actually know what you have and what requires fixin. If you need European Connections Ph. No. let me know. Buy the new front-end parts right here online. Charles
