Question 240d timing

I am wondering if the Easley timing method works on the 616s They only mention 617s in the write up? I replaced the cam , timing chain, hd gasget and valve stem seals on the daughters car. It did not fire right up so perhaps I need to check the timing. Also maybe crack the injector lines at the injectors as of course the lines were empty? The battery will be charged up soon and I'll give her another shot.

Did the engine run at all? The reason it didn't fire right up is because the injection pipes were empty. These will self bleed thru injectors if engine starts.

The easily method should work for a 616 engine because the 2 engines are very similar.

Thanks for the reply. No it didnt fire up at all and I do seem to remember not having to crack the pipes. The battery was a taste weak so the chargers on now and if it wont fire up I will wait till tomorrow when my daughter can help.

Steve - noticed your list of cars - '85 240D. This is obviously a Euro version since the US versions ended in 1983. Did the 240D Euro production end in '85 along with the 300D ending in the US?

Yes ... As I understand it '85' was the last year for the W123s, 240s and 300s

Stevo,

Another thought, did you check to see if the GP are working? Easy way is to watch if the inside headliner lamp dims slightly when GP are turned on.

It may take a lot of cranking to get the fuel to the injectors. Don't crank for more than 30 seconds at a time and give the starter a chance to cool between cranking intervals.

Yes, '85 was the last year for the 240D. They stopped selling it in the US during the '84 model year because, as the low end model, it competed with the newly introduced 201 cars.

I have an '84 240D which is a Euro car.

Have a great day,

It just takes a long time get fuel back into engine once everything gets emptied. It is not rare to have to recharge the battery a couple of times before you get it going. This is something I learned after replacing the timing chain and other stuff in my 240D last winter. It's not like a gasoline engine that will fire right up after an overhaul. Some say that loosening the injection pipes at the injector until you see fuel coming out is the way to do this, but I think you can get there with patience and leaving them connected.

Good luck.

'83 was the end of the run for the US version 240D's.
