1987 300D lot of black smoke
A lot of smoke comes out of my 87 300D whenever the engine rpm goes above 3000. Form all the discussions on this site it seems to me that I need to adjust the ALDA, but can any one tell me what is ALDA, where is it located and how to adjust it.

Before you rip into the ALDA (hard to get to on this car, believe me!), does the smoke appear only under heavy throttle or all the time?
I ask because the ALDA being out of adjustment isn't the only source of excess smoke -- if the injection timing is out, you will also get smoke at high engine rpm. I see only a trace of smoke at full throttle in mine, but a new head (I think) and full R&R for it makes it a new engine, for all intents and purposes. Get the timing checked before you try to twiddle the ALDA -- these engines appear to smoke much more that the older ones if the timing is off. Peter

To adjust the ALDA in this car, you need to remove the intake manifold. It's not that hard to remove, but it'll take a LONG time to do road tests with in between adjusting.

Smoke starts to come as soon as the rpm goes above 3000 even if the gas throttle is half way. The black smoke goes away by releasing the gas throttle just enough to drop the rpm below 3000.
All the injectors are good and the power is also very good. I will get the timing checked. Thank you for the information |
