Cool New addition - 1980 300SD Turbodiesel, help with codes

Just added a new member of the family, my first diesel, a 1980 300SD Turbodiesel. She is a beauty, if I do say so myself. I have been searching topics on this forum to learn about the W116 and especially diesels. I could use some help to figure out the codes on the metal plate on the cross member in front of the radiator. The codes are as follows:

3 6B 9546720 61
116120 12 08025 7
473H M -
531 588 592 639 800
440 467 491 518

Any help with each of the codes will be greatly appreciated. I expect as a new diesel owner more questions will be forthcoming.

The second line is the chassis number -- 116.120 is the body type and subtype, the 12 means automatic tranny, and the rest is the serial number. Not a VIN number in the American sense -- they changed laters, as my 87 and 88 have "standard" VIN numbers with letters in them.

Thanks Bill and psfred for the reply. The car is a gold color and has been repainted, but there is no evidence that the prior owner changed the color. The seats and door trim are a caramel shade of brown and the carpet is a light tan. I am trying to confirm the exact colors so that I can get some touch-up paint and order some new floor mats. Bill you are right the car does not have a sunroof. It also does not have a cruise control.

Bill you are right! I pulled the cover off and the cruise control stalk is broken off. I will have to see about getting it replaced. I got the window sticker for my 300E from MBUSA and plan to request it for the 300SD also.

question on paintscratch.com...

When I purchased my car the owner told me the color was "Inca Red". Not knowing a lot about things just yet, I took her for granted.
When I went out to paintscratch.com I noticed the color is called "English Red"...it certainly looks like the burnt orange-y color my car is...
Who's right?

Thanks, TXBill-
It appears after closer inpsection of PaintScratch.com that Inca Red Clearcoat Metallic was only offered for one year: paintscratch.com has it under 1980 but my car is a model year 1981.
By the way, I was able to get the paperwork from MBUSA for mileage certification but how do I go about getting the window sticker?
Apparently the first owner did indeed order the car in Inca Red and with a leather interior, not Tex~ I'd be curious to know what else he ordered that may not be readily apparent to me.

MBUSA phone number

TXBill,

Can you provide the phone number for MBUSA. I am a new (purchased 24 Aug 02)1982 300SD anthracite gray owner and would like to get the window sticker for my car as well.

Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Rob

Congrats on the 116.....I really struggled between the 116 and 126 when I was looking and, after going with the 116, have had no regrets with my decision. People always ask about it and the CHROME!

These guys are awesome, too......haven't had a question yet that didn't get an answer..... Happy dieseling......

I have found this forum great for my 300E and expect no less for the 300SD. The W116 is a great body style and I like the CHROME also. While I was considering the purchase I used the search feature a lot. My diesel IQ is growing. Thanks for the welcome to the Diesel Forum.

TClanton

Just noticed you are in Birmingham, AL. I am originally from Alabama and lived "over the mountain" in Shelby County before moving to Georgia.

I went to PaintScratch.com the other day to get the exact color name for my 300CD. I didn't have the codes with me, since my car has been in the shop for the past month. I just based it off what i can remember the color being. Today, I found a piece of paper where i had written the codes down on. The color I thought it to originally be was Topaz brown, but it turns out to be Milan Brown Metallic Clearcoat. As I can recall, my car is much darker than that shade, but it is metalic. So I am stumped as to the reliablity of the paint codes, or at least the matching of shades by PaintScratch.com.

I don't plan on buying any touch up paint. I am planning on repainting my whole car within the next year or so. The paint is cracked bad on the hood and trunk, but the rest of the car is in good shape. I was mainly looking for the name of the color, so i can use that, instead of the other name I use to describe the shade, which I will not repeat at this time.
