1000 miles yesterday in my SDL

Yesterday I logged over 1000 miles in my 300SDL.

South Plainfield, NJ to Atlantic City, NJ - 130mi
Atlantic City, NJ to Absecon, NJ - 20mi
Absecon, NJ to South Plainfield, NJ - 130mi
South Plainfield, NJ to Warrenton, VA - 270mi
Warrenton, VA to Charlottesville, VA - 70mi
Charlottesville, VA to South Plainfield, NJ - 380mi (long way home)

Ok, well it was 990 miles. I refueled in central, VA at appox 450 miles and took an hour nap.

Aside from my neck hurting a bit, it was an excellent trip. No mechanical problems, and my back or butt didn't hurt, nor did my legs. I did take off my left sneaker at about 700 miles because my foot was falling asleep.

The 126 is designed for long trips, and it really shows.

Wink

And the reason for all that driving? I hope it wasn't toward your effort to hit 300k by 1/03.

First I dropped my friend off in Atlantic City. Then went home to get some stuff, then headed out to Warrenton, VA to check out a car on ebay. I check it out, made my offer, then headed to Charlottesville, VA to see a friend, then headed home. It was fun, and yes, my goal is getting closer and closer

I think all MB's do well on long trips...I did a 300 miler the other day and was amazed at how fresh I felt after the drive....almost tempted to make the 1000 mile trip to Texas to see the family for Christmas this year....seems my car can make about 800 miles or so on a tank of fuel on the highway...gotta love the 140 S class...great ride ,many amenities .......and FINALLY(!!!) in an MB, a great stereo

I can just load up the 10 disc CD changer and drive all day

car puts a smile on my face each day as a marvel of engineering

Ye gods, Warren, and I thought 600 miles was a long way!

I drove to Hollywood Fl. over Xmas -- took two days each way so I could stop and see engatwork in Macon, Ga., and to see my brother in Tennessee, but could have done it all in one, I suppose -- 1200 miles or so.

My legs got stiff, since I only stopped once on each leg of the trip -- Evansville, IN to Macon, Macon to Hollywood. Six hours sitting in a car is too long for these old bones, have to get out and walk around more than that.

turnne1 - you must have forgotten what its like to take a long trip in a 123. Its miserable. Don't get me wrong, I love and respect my '84 300D, but its real weak point is the long highway trip. The engine is extremely noisy as it screams along at 3500-3800rpm, and the seats are terrible. When I got back from my trip to Princeton last night my back was killing me, and my ears would have been ringing terribly had I not had my earplugs in!

I plan on keeping my w123, but a w124 or w126 is in the future simply because Mercedes finally figured out how to make a quiet interior and they got the gearing down so highway cruising is more tolerable.

W123's are GREAT on long road trips

I have made NJ to Ohio, 650 miles, stopping only for fuel and biobreaks. I was amazed at how fresh I was on both ends of the round trip. I also drove the 1977 300D back from FL when I bought it, 21 hours, 1,100 miles straight through. Although I will admit to being wiped out when I got home, when I made my last fuel stop in Baltimore, I really felt pretty good and even when I got home, I was tired, but not sore.

I've done similar trips in Minivans, Pick-up's and sedans and never felt as good as I did getting out of my W123.

I have a 1-1/4 hour commute, 1 way, and I can think of no other car that I would rather drive.

There is no comparison between my 83 123, sold, and the 92 124 I own now. My back started aching after about 2 hours in the 123. It was noisey and under powered. In the 124 I can drive all day and still feel fresh.

I routinely drive 800-1000 miles per week in the 124 (little sales rep in a big territory-Eastern PA and all of NJ). I recently drove to and from Marco Island, FL about 3000 miles round trip - the car was fantastic. I had no machanical problems, used no oil, got 33-37 mpg the whole way-even at 80mph+. While I was enjoying this fine engineering, my wife slept like a baby.

This is the third MB for me. The fourth will likely be a 95' 300SD

took the senic route back went through the mountians of Allegheny co. MD which are some tall long mountians. my back was killing me though it hurt before I started too
Tires felt like jelly and the vibration from my el' chepo tires were bad but all and all it was a great trip. first long distance trip I've taken in this car now I'm up to 280k on the ole' odometer getting closer to that milemarker.

I agree with some of the posts about the enging "droning" sound at highway speeds being somewhat fatiguing......I remember when I owned the 85 SD...at 75-80 therewas a definite "droning" sound that could be heard that was an issue after a couple of hours...however in the 92 300D(and my current SD) its a different story....engine is much quieter and the gearing is such that the car doesn't turn 3800 RPM to go 75mph

been there

did the 1300 miles tampa-ct straight thru - turned the car off once
(to eat) and no pain afterwards!

noise level just a tad high with the windows down , but we loved every minute.

Greg:

Check your downpipe (from turbo to tranny mount) for cracks. It is mounted pretty stiffly, and can be broken completely through, making the car drone horribly.

Also, check for a bad center mount on the driveshaft. If the rubber gets old, the driveshaft vibrates at speed, sounds like a leaky muffler. If you feel some vibration at the mount while driving (put your hand on the tunnel beside the rear part of the driver's seat), you have either a bad mount or a bad universal. The drone will drive you crazy.

So will bad tires or old shocks. Both will cause a sublte vibration that gives you a headache and wears you out -- not really the engine at all.

Ditto for wornout engine and tranny mounts.

You shouldn't be tired after driving any W123 (or any Benz, for that matter) in good shape.

My 98 E300 turns 2900 RPMs at 80 mph. Eats up the highway like nobody's business. Just curious as to what the mileage is on the SDL with 5 cylinders?

The 300SDL has 6 cylinders. I didn't figure it exactly but it looks to be about 24mpg at 80-85mph the whole way.
