250k mark & new parts

Hit 250k in the 300d this morning taking the kids to school. When I got home I smelled antifreeze so I popped the hood and sure enough there was a pin hole in the top of the *radiator (plastic part). I checked fastlane for the part and it is reasonable but also called around town and found a brand new Nissens*for $180 local. So picked it up this afternoon and will install as soon as the rain quits tomorrow. If I can get pictures I will send them up for the FAQ pages.

Can't you fix it with epoxy? I fixed my 240D upper tank 10+ years ago with epoxy and its still OK.

Save your $180.

Aren't these new plastic parts wonderful. Older brass tanks could be soldered and were as goos as new.

I could see GM or Ford using plastic radiator tanks, but MB? Sounds like a serious decrease in quality.

If this was a car I only used around town for short trips I would think about it. However I take this car on long trips to very remote areas where it is the only MB seen for weeks at a time I don't want to risk the thing blowing out on me when I may be 30 miles from any paved road, 50 miles from any cell service, and 200+ miles from any MB parts house. If the new part lasts like the first one did then I will replace it in 2022 when it fails as well

Heres the deal, I installed a new Nissens today. Job is about as easy as it gets. To RR the radiator you need three things, 10mm wrench, screwdriver, 19mm wrench. Took about 1 hour to do everything. Talk about easy. The Nissens was an exact replacement for the Behr part, had brass fittings for the tranny cooler, Behr had aluminium, and is suppose to be 30% stronger. So far the car seems to run a little cooler at highway speed and heavy city driving. This is because of new radiator I'm sure, nothing to do with brand. The one I removed had a good 4" hairline crack after I got it clean enough to get a good look. This would have been a big problem if it let go on me at highway speed. I am all for "rigging" a fix for most stuf but cooling system is not something to screw around with.
