odometer/speedometer help
The odometer is not working on my 1985 300td. I have it out. The problem seems to be between the brass gear on the outside of the main odometer and the plastic(?) gears that are part of the odometer inside where the numbers are. The two white plastic gears that come off the cable operate, they turn the brass gear on the outside of the main odometer but nothing is happening beyond that. I can turn the plastic gears inside both the main odometer and the trip odometer and everything operates then. However, when that brass gear turns on the outside of the main odometer turns it does not activate anything else. Anyone else run ino this problem? Do you know how to fix it. I know some people mentioned getting rid of the gear that connects the main and trip odometers but there does not seem to be anything wrong with that. It turns freely and it takes little effort with my fingers to get both odometers to turn. How does that external brass gear connect with the odometer inside the bracket?

Check to see if the shaft that has the wheels or gears on hasn't slipped out of its mounting holes. That happened to mine.

Did a search and went to the post entitled 'odometer malfunction'. The problem and solution are clearly described there. I knurled the shaft with a vice-grip instead of a punch but it seems to have solved the problem.
