How were the brakes on your 1959? I drove a 1961 190Db for about 5 years in the late 60's. The drum brakes seemed ok at the time, but when I switched to a '68 220 D/8 the 4whl disks made the '61 feel like a wagon with old wood friction brakes. When I drove the '61, always had trouble with the dealer's parts guy wanting to sell me stuff for an earlier 190 or the later 200D. Seems the '61 was a one year only event, wide grill and hood taper like a 200D Finnie, but the rest was all Ponton. Notice that your heater ducts look like the mice have had a good time. How available are these 'cardboard' ducts. Still have the '61, but it has not been driven in several decades! Expect to do some restoration over next few years, needs rear windshield replaced. Have glass, but need the gasket or seal that surrounds it. Is your interior leather or what? Looked like the front seats were buckets, mine has a bench. Hope you enjoy the '59, looks real nice.

The brakes on the 59 are definitely different from what I'm used to. I will be giving them a thorough going over to make sure that all is well there. It takes alot of pedal to stop the car. Some of the "scarieness" of the brakes may just simply be me not at all used to how old iron behaves.

As for the ducts, I found and marked a website that makes a replacement part. It's pricey, but much more permanent than the cardboard like stuff that is no more. If I cannot find an inexpensive replacement, then I'll order from the web.

Y'know, with all these Benzes you're acquiring, are you suuuuuuuuure you need that big ol' Dodge pickup? I think I know someone who would be happy to relieve you of that extra burden to your insurance and registration...

I got the car registered this afternoon. I'll definitely have to bleed the brakes. Don't ask how I missed this, but the reserviour for the brake master cylinder was bone dry. I have much better brakes now, but they still obviously have air in the lines. They grab earlier now, but still very poor performance overall.

The inspection was every bit the fun that I thought it would be. The inspector just turned the key as they normally would, of course nothing happened. I showed him the pull knob, and he pulled it out to start cranking. This car likes to have the throttle opened up a bit while starting, so started to reach down to the throttle pedal to help it along. He saw what I was going to do and pressed down, bringing the car to life. He was familiar enough to know what a column shift was, but put it down in 2nd gear thinking that it was first, immediately stalling it before I had a chance to say anything. I then showed him the shift pattern, and he stated his surprise of a 4 speed manual shift on the tree.

He then hit the horn to test it, which does not work. I then hit the button under the dash where one of the previous owners rigged it up to work.

He found the empty master cylinder reservour and added fluid. Afterwards, it was both of us on the hunt for the location of the vin number for the car.

Next on the agenda was the plates. I got the information for putting 1959 plates on the car, and put normal plates on untill the 59's that I bought come in and I get with the proper people on permission to use 'em. When I left, I got a comment from a person sitting in a car next to mine. They liked it.

Finally over to the hardware store to get bolts for the plates, and we ended up there for nearly an hour while we were discussing the car with other customers. One older lady gave me an invitation to bring the car to a car show a week from Saturday. Unfortunately I'm gonna be stuck at work. I gave her my address for a reminder for next year's event. It'll be in better shape by then anyway.

I can already tell that I should make sure that I'm never in a hurry to get anything done while driving this car around. I'm having more fun than the law probably allows.
