First fixes for the 190Db

Went out to the car this morning to tinker around and see if I could figure out the lighting issue.

When I started, only the left side marker lights worked, and the right side low beam. Hit the high beam switch, and the right side headlight would shut off and the left side high beam would turn on.

I disconnected the front marker light to check for burned out bulbs. Bulbs were good. I cleaned out the socket and both front and rear marker lights decided to start working. <>

I move on to the headlights. I couldn't find anything amiss with the wiring. Then the right side headlight quit working alltogether. I once again cleaned out connectors, and grabbed a sealed beam that was rolling around on the floor of the other MB. I now have all lights working, except one of the marker light bulbs came apart. I'm going to get new bulbs for both and then reassemble them. It's now ready for inspection. Next up will be fixing the speedometer. :p

Diesel, are you married? 'cause I've never seen a guy so much in love with a car (I'm just jealous, not sarcastic...)

Question

Bill, what all's wrong with the 190D? What all would need to be done for it to be roadable?

Maybe I can convince Robin to go for it

Nope, I'm happily single!! Any woman that I would want anything to do with would have to be every bit as eccentric as I am.

EDIT: Here's one in way better shape than mine, same colors as yours Diesel. Plus it has a title, so I won't need a title hearing to get it on the road.
Snag that one Bill!! I grin ear to ear every time I get into mine and drive it!!

Hop in, turn the advance knob to full advance, turn the key all the way on, grab the gorilla knob with both hands, trying to keep it in that TINY little spot between the glow circuit and the start circuit, count to 25 out loud, and then pull the rest of the way out, listening to that old starter roll that old engine around a few times, and then hear it clatter to life.

Then feel the car shake for a few seconds while a rough fast idle smooths to a hyper clattery purr, filling the cabin with an impatient buzz as it awaits you to slide that column shift into gear and ease away. Then turn the advance knob back to its normal spot.

The 190d's are primitive, rough, noisy and music to my ears.

Hmm....

I'm considering the purchase of a '61 190Db. One of my concerns is the injection pump and engine parts. How common are the OM621 engine parts and does anyone know about repair parts from ThermoKing?

If the car has no rust, new paint, good engine, refreshed brakes, and needs some interior work, what's the next item I ought to be concerned about?

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Diesel engines are indeed music... That reassuring idle is great.

Well, I'm in the parts hunt myself. Fastlane has come up short on gaskets, and mine is leaking engine and differential oil everywhere. Checks for things like brakes have come up no longer available. I will be stocking up on some of this stuff as soon as I can find it. I'd highly recommend the same if you buy the '61. At least with a '61, you can still look up bits from Fastlane. I've had to look for what coveres multiple years and backtrack it to mine that way. I'm sure there's a better way around this, I just haven't figured it out yet.

Yours sounds to be a couple of steps ahead of mine. Brakes are still a question mark, and I do need to bleed and check them.

I would recommend checking for leaks, hidden rust. Check around where the battery sits. I have a large hole there to fix on mine. Make sure that the electrical system is in good shape. I've been lucky so far on mine electrically. I've been pretty much just cleaning up dirty connections, and having electrical problems go away afterwards.

*drooling* Bill, I'd take it as a project car in a heartbeat if I had the $$ and the storage space.

So, on to the next best thing I talked to Robin about it, and, if she can get her finances together quickly enough, she sounds interested. Do you have any other pictures of the 190D? Robin wants to see some pics before making a firm decision as to whether she wants to try and pursue it.

I'm guessing that it'd be best to drive the truck out there and tow the car back...

Also, is it a column shift? If so, what's the shift pattern? I've never actually driven one (always wanted to, though), but I understand the base concepts of driving one (at least an American version)...and she doesn't. I'm trying to explain to her how it would work.

Thanks much! Just wondering, how quickly are you looking to get rid of her?
