strange brakes....

Coming home today after an hour ride....brake pedal goes to the floor.....whoa!....pump it up....it is fine again. Down the road a little slower and it does it again. Got it home and they work finr now. Crawled under, no wet spots.....nothing wet under hood and the brake fluid level is fine........what gives?????

Yea, 99 percent of the time it's the master cylinder. Also make sure to check each of your wheel cylinders(calipers) too. If any are wet at all, replace it too! May not be enough to leak on the ground when your parked, but they can seep some and make your brakes spongy.

Hey I had the EXACT same problem in my 190D 2.2. Someone on here told me that it's most likely water in the brake lines. I haven't flushed the system, but I did open the brake resevoir and closed it very tightly. The brakes haven't done it since. When it comes time for spring, I am going to take it in and have the brake system flushed.

But mine did the exact same thing, about after an hour of driving the pedal would go to the floor and feel like you have little to no power braking, the car would stop, but it was more effort for you. Pump the pedal it was fine.

Water in the brake lines makes sense with what's going on. The car gets nice and hot after that hour of driving, the fluid in the brake lines starts to boil making vapor in the lines, so when you brake it you get nothing. It's my understanding that a bad master cylinder gives you symptoms all the time, all conditions. This only happens when the car is nice and hot. I've taken a bunch of 'long' (longer than an hour) trips and it hasn't done it to me lately. So I'm not worried until it does it again. And I'm going to get it flushed, filled, and bled in the spring. Merc said 75 bucks parts and labor. Not too bad, considering what they've charged me for other things.

I have driven the car around town on short trips and it hasn't happened since. think it could have anything to do with the ABS? If it was the maswter cylinder it would happen all the time, right?

strange brakes

I have had that happen with a GM vehicle (Oldsmobile Bravada) with ABS, the brake peddal went to the floor one day and after that the pedal was soft for a couple of days, I did not drive it until I could check it out, could not find anything wrong with it except now the ABS light would stay on, took it in to the dealer and was told I needed a new ABS unit for $1100.00.
