1980 300d non turbo. whatta ya think?

I bought a 80 300d non turbo today. body is clean as a whistle. seems most of the windows dont work. any ideas? its got a neat spare tank in trunk. supposed to hold 37 gallons of fuel total. the drive coupling on front of driveshaft came apart and wound shift lever around tranny. havent had a chance to work on yet but hope its not too major. what do yall think of naturally aspirated eng and what fuel economy to expect.
thanks
hillbilly

The windows not working might be bad regulators, or some simple thing such as a fuse or a bad relay. I happen to like the naturally aspirated engine over the turbo engine. This is because I just like to keep things simple. I have enough get up and go to meet my needs and don't really need the extra horses offered by the turbo. I still can do around 100mph, which is fast enough for me. When I first got my 300CD, I was getting about 30mpg, but that dropped into the low 20s in the winter. Now it is getting about 26mpg.

Hillbilly,

Well, here is what I think: Non torbos are obsolete. Non turbos have less power and less MPG.

I still have some non turbos but I don't drive them anymore.

At altitude, my vote is for the turbo no comparison with the non-turbo. Is this the same vehicle that someone posted to this board that the flex disc failed and did the same thing to the shifter? If not, you have a partner in repairs on this board.

Ignorance is bliss

I have never driven a turbo, but I love my non-turbo W123 300D. You get used to the lower power and there is one less thing to go wrong. I just wish that they outfitted the non-turbo 300D with manual heat/ac, windows, transmission, etc.

I just love the reliable simplicity of a non-turbo MB diesel.

JCD,

The model T Ford was simple too, but it is obsolete.

I prefer mechanical fuel injection over CDI bcause it is simpler and I can fix most problems myself, but mechaincal is now obsolete and will not be manufactured much longer. Better performance, higher mileage and lower emissions are the results of the higher tech CDI systems.

Keep the high tech

I'll keep my "Model T" and if/when it dies, I'll look for a 240D
