I helped restore a Jaguar XJ6C once. It had the Jag straight 6 but a conversion plate with a chevy 350 turbo hydro tranny.

Well, there are some really cool Volvo 700 series wagons with V8 conversions. There is an outfit that specializes in such things. Of course, it is a Volvo with that crappy all plastic interior.

I have a 2.2L diesel, with a 5-apeed. What kind of pickup truck would I be able to put it into? The body was creamed in a late-nite accident while parked.

larry

if i remember right wasnt a 302 the result of combining a 327 bore and 283 crank?

the 302 was, as larry noted a sweet little engine. a friend had one back in the day. i think it had something like an 800 cfm carb but he said when you wound it out "it would lay back its ears and flat run".

the 305 was a 283 bore and a 327 crank i think and generally aknowledged to be a pos.

the ford 302 "tunnel port" used for trans am was also a really hot little engine.

Engine swapping an SBC into any MB is a challenge. You will need the correct oil pan and use a GM transmission that will fit in the trans hump. If you have never done an engine swap before, I don't think you know what you're in for. If you have, then I'm sure you will know how to do adequate research to make it happen.

If you do some looking, there was a gentlemen that swapped a Chev V6, I think the one that is a sawed off SBC, into a 300TD. He posted pictures of the process and did an excellent job. He obviously had much experience as well as the necessary fabrication and welding skills.

I have seen in some Haynes manuals some diagrams for difficulty of a repair operation. They show one to five wrenches, with five wrenches being the most difficult to accomplish operations. An engine overhaul is five wrenches. An engine swap like you are considering would be about ten or fifteen wrenches.

Good luck,
The particular V-6 you are refering to is the Chevy 4.3 Vortec..........not to be confused with the Older 3.2, 3.8, and 4.3 BUICK V-6 which shared parts and design with the Buick V-8.

That said, I wouldn't even joke about putting a bowtie engine in a Benz. I'd strongly suggest either trying to make the 603 happy or maybe trying to get a 617 put in, or sell the car and get another M-B (or a Chevy or a Ford). The engine swap would be more trouble than it's worth, and you will veyr likely not be happy with the end-result.

Just some thoughts...good luck!
Chevy made a 302 dip stick!! It was put in a 69 Camaro Z-28 it had 12.5 compretionand mad 302 HP.

normally

i find chebbys boring too but back in the trans am war days the us mfgrs were doing some great things with the engines.

the rest of the cars were hopeless though. no brakes no handling no steering... but great stonking motors that wound and wound!
