Fuel drip rate?? '83 300D

I took the fuel lines off of all the injectors to see how much was being squirted out. Much to my amazement, it was just a little drip at each line. I know that the real squirt or spray happens inside the head at the injector, but I thought I'd see a little more action at the end of each tube. How much should I expect to see?

Dirty Ern,

Well, if you go 60mph and get about 30 mpg, then, in thirty miles you use one gallon of fuel. Calculate the rpm at 60 mph times 30 minutes to get the number of rpm, the number of power strokes (divide by two), the number of cylinders (multiply times 5) and you have the number of squirts in a gallon of fuel (in excess of 200,000). So, that comes out to be a very little bit of fuel per squirt (more than 50 squirts per milliliter). Like less than a drop. When you force it out of a nozzle like the fuel injector, it may look a little more dramatic than a fraction of a drop falling from an open tube, but the volume is still very little. And I am very thankful for that, myself.

Good luck and hope this helps. Jim

It all makes sense.
I have a car that I recently bought that doesn't run and was wondering if it was getting fuel....it is. Got to look elsewhere!
Thanks
Ernie

Specs call for 50 microliters per injection at full throttle. About a drop.

If you want to check, hold the throttle wide open while cranking. However, if you have any fuel at all, your pump is probably OK.

You CAN check by installing an injector to the end of the line, but outside the prechamber -- very dangerous, and the fuel mist can be ijected straight through your skin -- and this can be fatal if enough gets in.

Have the injectors checked -- most diesel places will test them for free.

Most likely you have bad glowplugs or low compression -- unless someone "worked" on the car and really screwed up the injection timing or valve clearance.

Its probably compression. First thing I did was adjust the valves. The PO said it was running a year ago when he parked it and took off globe trotting. I'll see if I can borrow a compression gauge. Thanks
