'80 240D: Are injectors bad?

The car has 130,000 miles. It feels like the engine has a bad miss when accelerating and an occasional miss when cruising. It starts up fine when cold but is hard to start when warmed up. It idles decent when warm and it doesn't smoke when accelerating. I've replaced the fuel filter and adjusted the valves with no real improvement. Should I start by removing the injectors? Can they be taken apart and cleaned or should I just replace them? What about testing them first? How much should a shop charge for testing?

You need to start by doing a compression test.

Good luck,

Running Diesel Purge through it would be a cheap, relatively easy next step... about $20.... but after that the next step I think has to do with continuing the "work" on the valves... that is checking the chain stretch and setting your injection pump timing since it is dependant on the chain for accuracy just as the valve action is....

Atikovi,

Some Diesel shops will test injectors at no or a nominal charge. It should be about $50 each to replace the injector tips if necessary.

If it starts easy when cold, your compression is OK. Hard hot starting is usually not enough valve clearance or a bad starter. Have you tried waiting longer for the GP to get hot when starting engine hot?

Another thing, there are 3 filters. All can account for losing power on acceleration. The third one is inside the fuel tank.

I guess I read his message differently. I thought that what he meant by "miss" was a single cylinder missing.

If what you mean by miss is just rough running, then the others have offered the best approach suggestions.

Good luck,
