I keep looking at the pictures and can't convince myself either way that its original or a repaint. My door hinge area is a little strangely sprayed too.
If it is a repaint - which is consistent with some of the indicators - it is a good quality job. One of the indicators is the stone stars in the headlight doors while the panel below the headlights and the hood are free of rock chips. But it looks like someone really stripped a lot of trim off of it for a repaint if it really has been done. This is one car I wouldn't pay a premium price for without looking at it in person. I'm more likely to use EBay for a plain-jane car that seems to be accurately described and reasonable in price. There have been quite a few in the past week or so for someone looking. And I still would never send money ahead of actually seeing the car. Ken300D |

IMHO, both cars are worth a look.
Sometimes we lose perspective in searching for perfection. The burgundy 123 at this point is up to $3500. Where else are you going to get that much value for $3500? The owner obviously has taken some pains to keep the car looking good from the top. I don't believe he/she would have let the underside get trashed, and even with some rust, surely this car is going to give you several good years of driving a wonderful car. Am I wrong?

LOL
Oh, don't let my signature throw you off. Although I do really like my car, I have a good deal of respect for the way any Mercedes is designed and built. I think of it this way. For $3500-$4000 you could buy a pristine 1990 Ford Tempo.

If I wanted to, I can buy 2 or 3 pristine Ford Tempo's for $3500-$4000, but I would prefer a Mercedes for $1500-$3000.

Perhaps this is why the thread originator mentioned 85's:

Thanks Spoilsport...
Yeah, the 85's in my humble opinion are the best of the 123 line. They were the last, the most advanced and offered the most power (in numbers). I dunno, and the fact we had two 85s, makes me biased. I won't own a 123 unless its an 85, just for collectability's sake.

Usually the first example of a vehicle type is the most collectible.
People prefer the 1964 Mustang over most others. The 1953 Corvette is extremely sought after.

Vrsmith, I see your logic, but it doesn't apply for a car like the w123 Mercedes. In your cases, milestone vehicles are worth more, typically the first year production due to simplicity, rarity, so on and so on, but for a mass production car like the Mercedes 123, typically the last car with the most improvements seeks the buyer's approval. If it were a rare car, any year is good, but for a car to use, you want the latest, and best. Read any buyer's guide for Porsche or BMW and the like; you will find most buyers and users prefer the latest and greatest. The 64.5 were rarer than other Mustangs, and not as popular as 65s and the latter. They were very hard to get new, and lacked some of the later trims that are all too common on latter cars. The 53 Vette with its Blue Flame Special, (though a pig) is a milestone car, earmarking an era in the American sportscar.

This would seem to make sense Randall but if a buyer sees more value in a first year car, this rule does not apply. The car is always worth what a buyer is willing to pay for whatever reasoning used in the purchase, whether a statistically "popular" decision or not.
