Weekend Wreck
Well Sunday was a day I should have known to stay in bed.
Saturday I pulled of the front quarter panel to fix a dent, sanded and primered the entire front end and half the roof (ran outta time) and installed my new euro lamps On Sunday it decided to start raining for the first time in a long time so of course the oil mixed with water on the road is more slick than ice. So going around a curve on my way home only doing 35 mph the tail end lost its traction and caused the car to start spinning in circles forcing me into some trees. Now my half shaft is busted so the wheel is dangeling off the car just held on by the break hose and it appears that the section of the frame where the spring is connected to on the passengers side is pushed out towards the outside of the car about 3 inches or so. and the arm thing holding the back wheel is crushed inwards. The pass. door is bent up in 2 places but definatly replaceable (window did not bust even after I flew against it haha)(door even still opens without a hitch) and the front windshield is gone. Needless to say these cars are built tough if I was in a good old American peice of tin I would be worse off than I am now. So does anyone happen to know if the frame will be repairable and how difficult will it be to change that arm? I belive the spring bottom is attached to it. maybe a rough estimate on time length. I want to do all the work myself of course well maybe not the frame thats probably out of my domain lol. any sugestions on fixing this poor girl will be more than greatly appreciated Thank you, Broke Benz Jeff |

Sounds like its a parts car. It would probably cost less to find another one on Ebay than to fix yours unless you can do most of the work yourself. It might be difficult to get the rear axle aligned properly.
Just my opinion without seeing the car. If you will have the work done, you will have to get estimates from shops that will do the work. Its hard for anyone to give an estimate without seeing the car. P E H |

I'd check with garages that do collision repair on the
cost of repairing the bent frame. Some specialty businesses do this service for trucks, who seem to require it regularly.
Sorry for your bad luck, and hope you can pull the car together. |

I have one of the U shaped middle parts that the rear A-Arms attach to. You can have it for the cost of shipping. The rear suspension is not that hard to change out . . . Just some big wrenches and a lot of elbow grease.

The front windshield out bothers me (unless you hit it and busted it) -- suggests the body is twisted.
Have a good body man look at it. It is probably not repairable, alas -- once the unibody is seriously bent, it is almost impossible to get straight again. Rear control arms unbolt easily AFTER you lower the rear subframe -- not easy, must have car and subframe both supported separately and lower subframe. Peter

Hmm well i wouldnt think the body was bent though i could be wrong but when i hit the edge of the tree i hit that small section between the door and the windshield it only left a dent about 1/4 in deep by 1 inch wide by 1.5 inches long not very bad.
though it does sound like I might just be better off buying a new body and frame altogether I can't afford to get the repairs done and my insurace company told me sorry about your luck. so in the mean time I just purchaced a VW.... are there any web boards like these for VW's ? Thanx Jeff |

If you purchased a VW diesel, you may want to check out www.tdiclub.com.
On a different note, www.vwvortex.com is a big VW board, but the atmosphere is entirely different than here or on tdiclub.
