Looks Like A Big SnakeSkin !

83 300D. Had to remove the passenger side underneath dash kick panel to work on some leaks. I'm getting ready to put everything back together again. On the floor I found a 5 in piece of very crumbly foam like tubing that kind of looks like a big shed snake skin. Is that the infamous tube for the climate control sensor located in the top center of the dash? Also, found a lot of brown crumbly and sometimes sticky masses coming from underneath. What is all that crap? Does it serve a purpose and should I try to replace is with some other type of more sturdy foam? The sensor tube, if in fact that is what I found, where is it routed underneath? I know I have to take out the Glove compartment and I assume I have to find where the sensor is more or less by feel but where should the other end be connected? What would be good to use to replace this tube. foam pipe covering or just a piece of regular hose? I am kind of amazed to find such junk in a Mercedes! really falling apart under there!

A little More

Pulled GC. There is a rigid plastic hose underneath near the top of the dash, it had some remains of the foam. Feeling around toeard the sensor is another piece of rigid tubing. Do I just join these two together with a piece of foam tubing from Home Depot, the kind for water pipes? 3/4 inch ??? Also, is the A/C Evap drain tube nearby, may as well fix that too. Thanks Much.

And Even More !!

Found a black control box labled BOSCH GEBLASEREGLER part number 000 822 1103. It was at the right side on the glove compartment and it's 12 pins connect to a plg but the box was just hanging there, not attached to anything. What is it and where should it be attached? I'm guess the climat control computer but it sure seems like it should be attached to something and not just reating on a tube inside. Thanks Again.

According to a couple of parts searches I did, your "mystery part" is a "blower regulator". Both websites, however, said it was "unavailable at this time". I'm sure it should be connected to something, but I'm not familiar with it--I don't know if the servo-controlled ACC system on my 79 has the same part.

I replaced my crumbled temp. sensor hose with a piece of that clear flexible rubber hose that you can get by the foot at Home Depot, hardware stores, etc., and I gently clamped it in place at both ends with regular heater hose clamps. Later, I was worried that it might not sense the cabin temp. accurately, so I went back in and wrapped the rubber hose in the pipe insulation foam you mentioned. Seems to work fine.
