that's what i read, but LarryBible and a couple of other guys at this forum disagreed and claim that you can overrev a diesel (I'm still not quite sure how, though...).

Top Speed

Steve 300D,

If you're interested in ,more speed and more durability, check out the thread here on Intercooled 300DT Pictures.

Besides all of the above, you'll get better milage.

Ridge,

That work was awesome! Is it possible to do the same to a 200D 123? Seriously! This model needs some serious power boost... but its a tank nonetheless.

On the over-reving question, not sure how you could do it, on top speed run anyway!? If horsepower and torque are going on the downcurve, it means you would be slowing down for lack of power because at top speed it takes every ounce of power to keep it going a that speed. So-over-reving would seem impossible unless you were going down a huge hill or something...

More power

Don,

You have to have a turbocharger to use an intercooler. You might want to check out www.diesel************************ , they're propane injection unit works magic on turbo diesels (40% increase) and I've seen somewhere that it works on non-turbo engines, too.

I've gotten the 190D up to 95 on flat ground w/ the AC on, I know it could have gone a lot faster, but it would have taken a while and I didn't want to risk getting pulled over. My speedo goes to 120 mph where the jeep goes to 100. I find it comical that the slower car has the higher speedo and cannot even hit the top of it, and the faster car has the smaller speedo and can easily go faster than what it reads!

Haven't topped out the jeep, I hate how it sounds above 3500 RPM so I just stay out of that range. It just sounds like it's whining and makes you feel sorry for it.

On the high RPM thing w/ diesels... notice our cars do not have a redline on the tach. I think if it has no red zone it's safe to tach it out. Just the HP peak for my car is at 4500 RPM or something like that. And in my haynes manual it says the 2.0 (pretty much my 2.2) the max speed for the engine is 5150 RPM + or - 50 RPM.

Hey Turbodiesel,

Looks like your windshield washer fluid light comes on at 4650rpm or was that converted to a shift light??

topped out at 119mph

1985 300TDT topped out at 119mph. honest to god. there may have been a slight decline in the road, but to the eye the road appears flat. i guess it depends on a lot of things workinig together properly.

145 mph on recent trip in France

Have just returned from 2 weeks holiday in France.
Near Beziers in the far South, near Spanish border.

Went down, with car on train, Calais to Narbonne.

Another E320 owner had not turned off his Tow-Away alarm switch and his car was honking and flashing lights all night the whole way through France

On way back, on the A71, I had a totally clear stretch of Motorway with a view forward of about 8 miles.
Nothing in site and dead flat and straight.

I gave in to the temptation and topped out at 145 mph, maybe 146 mph.
Just about what MB claim for the car.
Rev counter still had about 200 revs to go to the red at 4600 rpm.

Had a new set of Pirelli P6000 before going to France so had maximum rolling radius.

I can only say it felt damm fast. It was just eating the miles up.

Also had the FUN ??? of going around the Paris Periphique at 7:00pm on a Saturday night, in seriously heavy traffic, at 90 + mph.
Some guys behind were flashing their headlight for me to move over.

They say Pariesenne drivers are the maddest in the world. Believe it.

Door to door Beziers to Bristol (UK) was 1071 miles driven.

Used the Channel Tunnel to get from mainland Europe to UK.

Just under 29 gallons for trip. Average 37.1 mpg.

Average speed for journey was 62.8, including some coffee stops and the Tunnel.
Took just over 17 hours in total.

Regards

Mike
