Diesel Top Speed

I hear people saying they get in the 90's 100's, but my 84 300D TurboDiesel can Max out the Speedometer, and still feels like it has more power (have to slow down Ohio Cops). What could have been done to the car to make it do this? Or were they able to go over 120 when they were new? Can anyone on here go faster then 100 with no problem?

I have read that some of the newer diesels will do around 140mph. As for your 1984 300D, the top speed should be somewhere between 105-110mph, maybe faster going down hill.

I remember reading that the max speed for an 85 300TD was 109mph. I think it was in some file on the maintenance CD I bought through Fastlane. I've never had it over 90mph although I know it would do more despite its age.

Yes, the turbo five cylinders will top 100 very easily. The 240D's are a different story. Even my Euro 240D hit 100 once.

Have a great day,

Actually it was a euro spec 450SEL 6.9. I think they used the perfect car for the movie.

Ronin was great (and so was the Merc). They used retired World Rally Championship drivers for all of the chase scenes. It paid off...

My 83 300D would top out at 105mph on a straight highway. My 99 E300 tops out at 130 because of the electronic limiter. She's really smoking at that speed....no pun intended!

My car would go to 100mph and I'm sure I could go faster downhill + some tail wind.. however the engine is sooooo loud!!

98 E300 here. Moves fairly quickly to 120. Couple of times i've visited that mark, I've chickened out on pressing it any further.

What about engine speed?

Im just wondrin, is it possible to over-rev these cars (especially the old ones with no electronic limiters etc.)? Its amazing to be able to beat the top speed indicated in the owner's manual (or at least at the indicator in the speedo)! I read somewhere (If I remember right, its in a Fiat Diesel Manual) that its ok to over-rev a diesel engine (meaning, it wont 'blow' like a gasser) but that wouldn't produce any significant increase in torque/power anyways, so why do it? Is this statement true for our MB diesels? In our quest for top speed, it just might be too tough for the engine...
