Gauge Cluster

Hey guys,
this is my fisrt post and I just go my first car. A 1981 300SD Turbodiesel.
There were no lights in the dashboard. I found out that the reflectors don't reflect the light from the lightbubls to the dash. So I installed some HID LEDs instead and it only cost me 7$ CDN This is what it look like

Let there be light

Twitch,

Nice going, always thought I was going blind. How about a little more info on how and what you did?

By the way have you checked out our thread on Diesel Discussion on "300DT Intercooler Pictures"? You and your SD might find the intercooler idea interesting.

Come on Twitch! Don't tease us! Give us all the extreme detailed version of how you did the modification to the dash lights. I'd really like to do it to my 300SD. Thanks.

Well, I knew you guys may want some more info on how I did this so I created this page on my site. It has step-by-step instruction plus lots of pics. I just took the pics today and uploded it, so don't be surprised by the numbers of typos I may have done.

By the way, since my PRNDSL had no light because the fiber optics were cut and I had no idea what gear I'm in at night, I also installed some HID LEDs there.

I'd like to do that, but seems like a lot of work for me.

The LEDs I got aren't normal LEDs, there are high intensity discharge. You can find these at electronic part store (you won't find it at Radioshack). Or maybe you can find them at the Speedshop

Twitch,

Thanks for posting the directions. How much heat do these HIDs produce? Are they going to be too hot in some locations?

HID LEDs produce very very little heat so you can put them anywhere without worrybing about melting stuff. I use a LEDs for my fiber optics and it didn't melt.

Twitch,
That's a great solution you came up with for your lighting. How do you like the blue? Also, thanks for the great photos of the process on your website. I don't know if I'm going to do the LED thing yet (although I'd love to supplement the OEM dash lighting with these LEDs connected to their own on/off switch) but I'll use those great pictures to help me remove the dash to replace the faulty dimmer switch. Thanks for taking the time to do that for us.

Twitch,

I am not an electronics expert, but why are you using resistors? Wouldn't a 12V HID be good enough without resistors?
