It is really, REALLY helpful to know what car your question is about.

If your car is a W126 as in the picture, the flasher is most likely in the cavity behind the gauge cluster. Pull the gauge cluster and look for a silver box inboard of where the round connector plugs into the gauge cluster.

If it's a 300D from the same year as my 300CD, don't be surprised at the variable nature of the flashers, depending upon the manufacturer. I think the quality is iffy with some of them. I once bought a new one that was much quieter, but would not reliably work for the four way flashers. Not sure what the problem was but I replaced it with one from a different manufacturer (can't recall the part numbers, sorry). The clicks got loud once again and the four ways worked when needed.

I thought I had a bad flasher, bought one, put it in and nothing happened. It turned out that one of the plastic levers on the emergency switch was broken and it wasn't moving even though the rocker switch seemed to be working.

thanks 123Guy. your advice worked for me!

flashers and emergency flasher

Hi, I'm a total newbie to this forum, and have only owned my 81 240D for eight days now, and I have fixed all the issues it had keeping me from getting a safety inspection except the flashers. The turn signals don't flash, and I've got a push button emergency flasher, about two inches by one inch wide, which pushes straight into the console behind the stick shift, and buzzes loudly when pushed, lighting all four corners, but not flashing. I have looked everywhere this thread has suggested, and found no flasher, and the foreign car mechanic has looked at it and believes the flasher is built into the emergency flasher unit. Does anyone know if this is true, and can give me some guidance on this? I could really use the help. mad jack

correct, the flasher is built into that switch.
lemme know if you need one, I'll ship you a used one.
(or if you need anything else for your 240!)

I believe the 81s may have gone to the small hazard switch (aprox 1&1/2x1/2 inches), in which case they used a relay for the flashers which is located under the console and fwd of the shifter.

By the by, since the hazard flasher switch has gone out of production, and I anticipate needing another one at some time, I'm working on reverse engineering the circuit for the hazard flasher switch, so if anyone has a bad one they are willing to let go of, it could be easier to figure out a working substitute, I'd be willing to pay a fair price, two to work from would be easier than one. I think the years go from about 77 through 80, with some of the 81s, like mine, having the flasher in the hazard button, the large inch and a half by two inch by two roughly. If anyone out there has already solved this puzzle, I'd appreciate an easy way out. Thanks, mad jack

I looked on Fastlane, and the part they describe as it (I think; they call it an "impulse relay") is slightly different. I believe mine has 3 pins and one plastic alignment dowel; however, the one that Fastlane pictures has 4 pins and that dowel.

Is Fastlane's part an updated one, or what's up? AFAIK, the flasher that's in the car now is original; the part has a "Made in West Germany" sticker or something to that effect. I brough thte flasher into the parts shop at the dealer and they want $50 for it. Fastlane wants $26 for the part I described.

Thanks in advance!
AllPartsExpress has the 3-pin relay (like I have). Part number MBZ005468. Cost $41.

Hi, as a newbie both to the forum and to Mercedes, I'm real interested if it gives more information than the stupid Chilton's book does. I think those are written just to tantalize one, and let you know you really ought not mess with it, but take it to a dealer, while it calls you stupid. In front, it always says, "written from a complete tear down", but every chapter is from a tear down of a different model, and no little thumbnail pics of the many aspects they don't show. Having never seen what's on a dvd, I'm interested, but kind of ignorant of what there is. A bit more information would be enlightening for me.
Thanks,
mad jack

flasher relay

Hi, I was wondering if you ever managed to find your flasher, and resolve your problem. I note you've got the dvd, but you don't say if you've had success or not. My own 240D by date should have a separate switch for the hazards, and a flasher, apparently, but actually has the 78-80 combined hazard switch with the flasher relay built in, which is also apparently not to be found for love nor money. I have had decades of experience with Harleys supposedly being altered on specific dates of specific years, yet finding frequent supposedly obsolete parts still being used in production until they run out, and occasionally doing very odd things, such as changing the bolt patterns of the cylinder base and the head bolts three years in a row, and finding an engine with one cylinder base pattern, with another year head bolt pattern, making the engine singular and unique in its own special way, and making repairs a matter of finding very hard to find cylinders which only were made one year.
I'm wondering if your turn signal flasher is built into the hazard switch assembly, as mine is, and was wondering if your dvd gives you any information which might help you resolve the issue.
