now hear this

My 82 240d with manual tranny makes a rattling noise as I start out in 1st gear. In neutral, at a specific low RPM the noise can be heard. The noise is also present at the same RPM with the clutch pedal pushed in, in all gears EXCEPT 4th. Last week on a trip to Williamsburg at speeds above 62 MPH the seemingly same rattle was constant and very loud.

Under neath the car I noticed that the linkages from the shifter to the tranny can be rocked (twisted) about 5 to 10 degees and makes a similiar noise. Could this 'slop' mean there is / are some missing bushings? Everry thing else is rock solid.

thank you, thebern

OK, structural things first,, just in case... Have you checked the trans fluid level ?

After thinking about this more.... I do not think this noise is in/from your trans... something is vibrating at that rpm...but the conditions in your tests would not point to the trans.... (I am guessing)...

Can you "feel" the noise in your pedal or in the gearshift knob ?

Your rattle may be similar to my buzz on my 83 manual tranny 240D. I have been trying to solve it ever sense I purchased the car 8 months and 9K miles ago. My buzz is always present, loudest at 17, 27, 47, and above 65 mph. The noise will instantly stop for a few seconds above 65 and then start again instantly with a vengence. I have replaced the tranny fluid, the flex disks, the driveline, motor and transmission mounts, all in vain. It is driving me batty!

The last items possible are tranny bad (shifts fine up & down) or a bad release bearing, pilot bearing, clutch. I really don't think it is the tranny, so I may need to have the clutch components replaced.

fluid is ok

I replaced the fluid a few weeks ago so that checks out ok. The condition has existed since I bought the car. I wonder if it is the pushrods (at the shifter) that go to the tranny levers. Also the noise doesnot happen when starting out in 2nd or reverse.

I cannot feel it through the pedal buy can through the shifter. If I move shifter slightly the noise goes away. It really concerned me at the 62MPH plus speeds!

Kinda simple response from not-very-expert owner but the auto transmissions will "buzz" at different speeds/rpms if shifter bushings are worn. I don't know how manuals are put together but expect there are bushings in there. I'd replace every one of those first thing.

I had an "engine" buzz that occurred at specific engine rpm. It turned out to be a rusted c-clamp at the back muffler.

Interested in engatwork's query.

Owner's manual calls for 10W20 and I have always used 10W30 as 20 not available. Looking at Technical Specif9ications listings in my Body and Chassis manual that I just bought (printed 1987) and it calls for ATF in 123.123 body with manual tranny (listed of course only with the OM616 engine, so I don't think it a misprint).

I know this has been debated in the past, but I am interested in a authoritive response as to whether the owners manual has been superceded on this issue.

I use Synthetic ATF, Red Line in one and Amsoil ATF in the other two 240d manuals.

Just as a point of reference, my previous diesel daily driver was a '68 220D/8. When it was idled some years ago, the drive train from the transmission back had 325K on it. Nothing but ATF had ever been in the tranny as long as I had the car (65K on). Since the book called for ATF, it probably had that fluid installed from the factory. Really liked that car, but if you think the 240D's are slow, take away 200 more cc's of displacement!!

I switched to RedLine MTL in all my manual transmission cars more than a decade ago. Stuff works great. Change it every 45,000 - 60,000 miles.

As for those phantom noises I think a good look at the exhaust system will be useful. The noise that goes away when you touch the gear lever is obviously associated with the gear lever mechanism. However the other reports of unpleasant noises can easily be exhaust system issues. The exhaust system is a pretty complex combination of potential noise sources, and it tends to be a little loose, allowing it to contact other stuff. On my 190E 2.3-16 this seems to always be the source of buzzing and resonant type noises.

Good luck, Jim
