TXBill and janko,
I remember reading a response on filling a 1998 E300D Turbodiesel and taking care not to start it until the oil has had time to dribble down off the vavle stem/guide seals as the stuff can be drawn into the intake and the engine can take off. I am not aware of this being an issue on the 350SD. But if you have a lot of miles and have worn guides and seals, I can see how this might be the case. Good luck, Jim

If you dump the oil in from gallon containers, it might fill the valve cover up to the oil baffles in the top. Once you have liquid oil in there, it will get sucked down the turbo when you start, and make blue smoke. It stops once all the liquid oil is out of the crankcase ventilation hose.
The solution is to add the oil more slowly and make sure it drains down before you add more. The 603 doesn't have that huge hole for the chain case that the 617/616/615 does. On the VW/Audi diesel (Rabbit, 4000, 5000, Volvo TD), the oil drains can get plugged and fill the valve cover with oil while running. This can be VERY exciting when the oil starts blowing down the blowby tube -- extra fuel, extra boost, extra power, can't shut it off! Happened to an aquaintance in his Bunny -- floored it to pass a truck on the interstate and it took off -- huge cloud of black smoke, sounded like it was going to blow, and no control! Got up to like 90 before the oil all burned out. Peter

Would putting in the fresh oil in the filter housing work?
