Lost an axle this afternoon

I was riding down the interstate today in one of my 1981 240D's coming home from my day job, I heard this loud thumping sound coming from the right rear. Pulled off the side of the road and took a look under the rear axle, there was oil everywhere. I got back in and limped her home. Raised her up on blocks and proceeded to pull the old axle and install a spare I had laying in the barn. Everything went pretty smooth untill it came to installing that darn C-clip back on the axle. Tried several times but it kept springing right back off. On the last try it went ping and that was the last I saw of it. Oh well tommorow is another day and I will get her finished and back on the road.

Yeah, I hate that. One little bit that you just dropped into the grass, and there you are, stuck.

Better luck tomorrow. Get an assortment, the one you had was probably too thick (they set the end clearance on the shaft).

PSfred,

I will be replacing the half shafts on a '83 300 cd this weekend. You spoke of "an assortment" of axle retaining clips. I didn't know there are different thickness's. Doesn't one just buy the replacement part?

I just replaced one in my 300D and all I had to do was install the spacer on the axle stub and put the c-clip on. Absolutely perfect fit.

I'm with Diesel 924 - I've replaced them on two different cars in the past month and all I did was install the spacer on the 1/2 shaft and did not have any problems with getting it on.
