Opinions? Ideers? VERY sick (old!) 220D

Gotta' customer's '72 (?) 220D/stick sedan here. Low (140K) miles, starts great, lotsa' power (for what it is....), no abnormal noises, but major (oil) smoke and oil consumption....and when it smokes, it misses like a gas engine with a plug wire pulled off. Start it cold, it runs great, turn up the idle knob and put it on a high idle, and within a minute or so, it's "missing" and my parking lot is literally fogged right in with oil smoke. The miserable thing doesn't even have an excess of crankcase pressure. All I told the customer is that the car isn't worth tearing down and fixing right.....but anyone got any ideas? I just want it outta my driveway, and I'm curious what ails it....but not curious to work for nothin'...

Thanks!

Jim Steere

The first thought that comes to my mind is a problem with the rings. I would, just for the heck of it, pull the injectors and pour some atf into the cylinders and let it sit overnight. The next day crank it over with the injectors out (to blow the excess out), reinstall the injectors crank it and see what happens. I don't really have an ideer as to why it works the way it does cold versus hot but I would at least try this just to see if it makes any difference.

Kind of sounds like valves are too tight.

Tight exhaust valves and blown vac pump diaphram. This will make heavy blue smoke, horrible oil consumption, and funny running -- makes a droning noise when it isn't running rough.

How long has the it had this problem? If it has been on the order of weeks, not problem, but long term (months and many miles), it may have also burned the pre-chambers.

Fix the diaphram, run some RedLine or Diesel Purge through it, and see what happens. Probably will fix it right up.

If not, can I buy it? The engine in the 220D I have is shot.

I agree with Peter - it's the diaphram. Had the same thing happen to me; of course I was 700 miles from home. If only idling it ran OK but go more than 40 MPH and in 10 seconds it would smoke like you wouldn't believe. Cost me $125 for the nearest MB dealer to fix it. Good luck.
