SD shakes to much at an idle

In the last 15000 miles my car has developed an awful shake, like it has a dead miss in it. I adjusted the valves and found them out real bad. 2 had very loose lock nuts and it took many turns to get them to specs. I replaced all filters. But I still have a real problem.
I have the same power as always driving it. It just shakes like hell at an idle, in gear or out. Please help. Your forum has been great for me to get high miles out of my cars. It is an 85 SD with 250000. It gets great milage since I tuned it up

One of the other guys had the same problem and he replaced the engine shocks and motor mounts and now his runs smooth. I would inspect those before I replaced but also check for a loose or disconnected vacuum hose. that would be an easy fix, although motor mounts and engine shocks are easy too, just a couple more dollars.

engine miss

Does the engine miss when cold or hot or both? Does it smoke and what color? Also have you cut out each cylider to identify which cyl. is not firing? Let me know I'll try to help I'm a diesel tech on caterpillar equip. Good luck!!

I had some improvement with all new motor mounts and engine shocks (there are two shocks - one on each side). Then I had further improvement with installing a new injection pump rack dampener pin.

The car still idles like it might have one cylinder with low compression. Maybe that's just a 5-cyl for you. But the shaking (which at times made the car seem like a 60's hot rod) has stopped.

I have an 1980 300SD that does the same. New motor mounts that made a big diff. However just before that it started to get rough at idle, especially for prolonged periods. Here we have stoplights that can be measured in minutes and it really does not like that. Other than this it runs great.
