Motor mounts - 300SDL
In the last few thousand miles i've been feeling alot of vibration. I'm sure my motor mounts have seen better days. I looked on the drivers side, and the top shock mount has ripped out of the the motor mount braket coming out of the engine, do I need a new braket? How much of a nightmare is this job? I heard on W124 603 engines that they have hydraulic motor mounts, while my W126 still has the old rubber type. I want to get this stuff taken care of before it starts getting cold. Thanks for any input.

turbodiesel,
I suspect the mounts on your vehicle are similar to the ones on the W123 series, as they are solid rubber units. When I noticed my 240D driver's side mount was literally torn in half, I changed both. While the intake and exhaust manifold gasket had been damaged, as well as the EGR line (a corrugated tube), the mount strut and frame support were still fine. So, I don't think you are likely to have done real damage to the strut unless the fastener that comes in from below has damaged the threads tapped into the strut. Get a set of new fasteners, new mounts and you should be fine. Good luck, Jim

motor mounts
I have the same car and had the same problem. the engine is supported by two rubber mounts and it also has two small shock absorbers. One on each side. The top mounts for these "shocks" tore out as well.pretty easy to replace. But you might have to get under the car to get to both sides. Make sure you check the travel of both shocks. Sometimes they get a weak spot in them were they always move up and down in the same spot. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

When I did motor mounts and new engine shocks, I also got new shock mounts. The shock mounts that are on the top side of the engine shocks have a rubber component in their center that goes bad over time - so its a good idea if you're going to the trouble of getting new engine shocks to also do the top shock mount brackets. The bottom of the engine shock is a more conventional bushing assembly like an old-time suspension shock absorber.
I'm speaking of the '82 300D - which I hope is helpful to you in the SDL. Ken300D |

The 603 has oil or gel filled mounts. Replace, and replace the engine shocks and mounts, too -- if the mounts have collapsed, its almost certain the shocks bottomed out and have been ruined. Happened on my 280 SE, too.
You can replace them with just a floor jack --use a piece of wood between the jackand the oil pan to lift the engine. I think you will be surprised at how much higher the engine sits when you are done. Probably ought to replace the tranny mount to (at the rear of the tranny, sits on a crossmember). Peter
