1984 300D Turbo - Injector pump rebuilding and calibration
I took my car to an independent MB repair shop because the engine was idling very roughly. When idling there is a loud knock. The mechanic told me that the injector pump unit needed to be removed and sent out for rebuilding and calibrating. The cost of this would be approximately $750. Does this sound right? Is this a common occurance? Any suggestions welcome.

I was quoted $250 for a calibration job at the local Bosch authorized turbo and diesel service shop. At least $750 for a total rebuild. He did indicate that the calibration did include a new ALDA. How many miles are on yours?

The car has 94,000 miles on the engine. So, you think the price is in line? I've been told by another "authorized" Mercedes repair shop that in his time in business, he has had to rebuild few. This is my reason for questioning the solution by the independent I took the car to for repair. If I might ask, what is ALDA?

Pump needs rebuilding in 94000 miles? Sounds fishy to me unless somebody has been twiddling with it already. I wonder what a new rack dampener bolt, a dose of injector cleaner, new engine mounts, and new air cleaner mounts would do for this car? I would be very surprised if the pump really needs rebuilding.

The motor mounts and air cleaner mounts have been replaced recently. I'm not familiar with what the rack dampener is. I think the injectors were worked on when the timing chain was replaced. I'd still like to know what and ALDA is, if someone can explain that.

Margan - do a search on here on "ALDA". There has been alot of discussion concerning the ALDA in the past. It is the "compensator" (for lack of a better term) that tells the fuel injection pump how much fuel to pump based on pressure of the intake or ambient conditions. I forget what it stands for.
trivia - I have an add from the June 1981 issue of Motor Trend and it says, concerning the fuel adjustment: "For example, the 240D's zero-excess four cylinder diesel engine is meant to run efficiently at 5,000 feet above sea level or at five. Mercedes-Benz science gave it a built in, barometric brain, to adjust the fuel/air mixture to the altitude." This is a direct quote from the ad - first time I have heard it called a "built in brain".
