Unhappy Diesel smell in the cab

Today I was stuck in some traffic and started to smell diesel/gas, at first though it was some old truck but after I was moving the smell stayed. I stopped to run an erand and the odor was still there. What shoud I check?

Few things worth checking fuel lines as they go into the engine do corrode in time, check for seepage.Pipe between tank and filler cap can also be suspect. Also check drain at filler cap is clear whilst your there. It might be worth checking nut on bottom of filter drain off is secure.Hope the translatiion is clear. It might be something else,I'm only going on personal experiences in these matters.Bear

Overflow lines between injectors, pressure line and relief line from IP and return from fuel filter, and then pressure line from lift pump (on side of IP) to fuel filter, then suction line to lift pump, in that order.

Usually the overflow lines. Get the proper stuff, then remove the old lines and cut new to match the length. Best to push it on with a pair of needle nosed pliers held jsut far enough back to allow you to push the end all the way down against the injectors. Keep the plug out of the short bit on the rear injector, you need to cut a short bit and put the plug in, then install.

Leak

I found the leak, it's the tube/hose going to the injector on the top of the engine. I will be trying to replace that in the next day or so.

Question: is it Dangerous to drive with it leaking?

Yep - its almost always those cloth-covered fuel return hoses that loop-to-loop between the injectors.

While not an official opinion - and I warn you that if you listen to my advice you may burn alive - if there is just a little moisture with no pooling of liquid fuel around the injector recesses, its safe to drive a little longer.

The return hose here on FastLane is good stuff.

Anybody notice if you get diesel fuel on your hands it is very difficult to get the "after smell" out. Maybe I am a little strange but I like the smell of the diesel fuel, I think it's kinda neat but if you get it on your skin, it soaks in and takes a lot of hand washing to get it off. You end up smelling like a machine shop. I even tried toothpaste which usually gets any smell out!

Just a drop behind the ears and that smell will be with you all week long. I call it 'Springtime in the Machine Shop'. A lovely thought.
