Another reason to love W123s...

as you may know, these were the last MBs with "real" metal bumpers.

Yesterday I was parking on a lot across from my doctor's office and neglected to put the car in gear. There was a slight incline, and before I knew it I had rolled into a light pole at a GOOD clip. In a newer car I would have expected a ruined "bumper" and maybe a deployed airbag. Yet the '83 240's bumper and rubber rub-strip displayed NO marks!

There are times that I love this car so much I would f*** it if I could figure out the mechanics of the act.

Stay away from the tail pipe, that's all I have to say about that.

I love the bumpers on these cars, I have bumped into a few trees and shopping carts with my bumpers, and have seen no damage at all. On my Audi's, I would hit stuff, and the bumpers paint would scratch, or the plastic would crack. On time one of them got bumped into by an old VW Rabbit, and not a scratch on the Rabbit's bumper, but the Audi's got several scratches.

My all plastic bumper shows NO signs after I took out a mail box. My license plate, on the other hand, is bent and all scratched up.

I fantasize about shoving Accords and Toyotas out into the middle of busy intersections with the 300TD - don't take this serious ya'll - I would NEVER, EVER do such a thing.

I had a NYC taxi hit me in the ass in my 300D with the metal push bar. No damage to me, and it snapped my neck back.

A Toyota Tercel rear ended my 83 300D a few years ago and the police were amazed that my car had no damage...none! The Tercel's front end was smashed and the fender was pushed back to where the door wouldn't open. Fortunately the young mother and her child were not hurt. That rear bumper on the 123 is one tough piece of metal.

Thumbs up

haha yeah I know how you feel about these big DOT bumpers though ugly they are pretty damn strong!

In fact I think on the W123 they look just as appealing as the original bumpers..

My W123 did me wonders tonight... I'm really proud of it!!

I love these cars as much as anyone on this page. But, all of us in the older cars need to be very careful. I say this after owning a 1970 280S - talk about a tank!!

The reason why more modern cars calapse during impact is so that the force of that impact is taken by the car and not by you.

Turbo, if your bumper/rear deck gave way during that incident, you would not have risked a head or neck injury.

So you mean that since you hit stuff you prefer the US bumpers over the shorter euro bumpers, hehe. I think that I am going to get a set of euro bumpers for the look. I was looking at a 300D non turbo and it hasa better bumper than the turbo cars because its rubber strip stays in better than the clip on ones. Maybe you should look into one of those because then it would be even stronger. That would be pretty cool. Can someone confirm which model comes with the heavier duty bumper?

omegabenz,

it's funny that a lot of people outside the US (at least in Asia) prefer the US style bumpers just to be different and cool hehhe... they think the Euro bumpers are for old people ... whatever :p
hehehe

The grass is always greener on the other side, until you get there.
