124 300D fender vent air intake

my 1991 300D 2.5 turbo has its air intake not infront of the radiator, but behind a vent on the right fender. im not sure what other 124's have this, but i think only 90-92 300D's. i was thinking that it would look cool to have a scoop over the vent and i was wondering how much this would improve performance. the vent goes through a short tube right into the air filter box, so it would be like a ram air. also i was wondering if getting a K&N would be worth it on my 300d. i have the panel type air filter.

who else has the fender vent? has anyone else thought of this?

The 2.5 turbo equipped cars I believe had that type of intake. The 190D 2.5T had it.

The 1995 E300 also has the vent on the right front fender.

Grdenko,

I have often thought of modifying odds and ends like this. However, I always seem to come to the same conclusion:

These are well-engineered cars manufactured in a certain way for a reason. The risk of altering a design that could negatively affect the car in some unforeseen way, trumps the possibility of modest performance enhancement.

I'd agree. The law of unintended consequences comes in to play all too easily in these types of situations. For instance, without a check on water drainage capabilities your new (proposed) scoop might funnel in more water in a rainstorm than the existing drain can handle. That could be a REAL problem. If you choose to try this I'd be very careful.

Don't mess with it - the car already has a pretty large airbox, assuredly bigger than the 121HP it is asked to support. With a Diesel, you need more air AND fuel, so enhancing one without the other (and I doubt this would increase air intake) is useless
