Car smokes heavily under hard boost

My car is smoking excessively under hard boost. The car is somking bad enough to block out headlights behind the car. Although it is great for tailgaters, there is obviously something wrong with the car, can anybody tell me what the problem might be. Thanks.

Any performance problems? Lower mileage? Oil consumption? etc

Check to make sure air filter and air intake isn't blocked somehow first.

Typically, these cars make very little smoke. I get a little puff of black of I floor it, and just enough at full throttle (up to 4600 rpm) that you can see it in the headlights behind at night, no more.

The usual cause of excessive smoke is late valve/injection timing or overfueling. Since I don't know of anyone with an overfueling problem with the 603 (ALDA adjustment), I'd get the timing checked first. If it is off, have the cam timing checked before adjusting (this is a major job on this engine) and if out, replace timing chain before adjusting injection timing -- chain stretch will make the valve and injection timing off, and replacing the chain fixes both.

This engine will smoke with either late or early injection timing.

Thanks for the replys guys, the smoke that I am getting is not super super thick, but it comes out in enough volume to create a pretty nice cloud. I am not too sure how the diesel engines are controlled, but I am told there is a fuel computer that could be culpable for the haze. I wold like to absovle other possible problems before commiting to buying parts that I may not need. Again, thanks for all of the suggestions, I will be spending some time in the garage over the course of the week.

I was having the same problem with my 87 300D. At full thottle I could have used my car in a Batman movie. Major black smoke during the day.Engine only has 80,000 miles and I could not understand why it smoked so much. Several years ago, when I replaced the trap-oxidizer, it seemed to get better for several months. After reviewing several posts on this site about plugging up the EGR vacum line I decided to try that, not for the smoking but to keep the intake from getting clogged up. Anyway, after doing that now I have very little smoke at full trottle. There still may be something not adjusted just right but this did help.

Can you tell me where to find the EGR vacuum line? This the first diesel I have ever worked on, I am assuming it is somewhere in the lower intake manifold area. Thanks for the suggestion.

EGR valve is on the passenger side of engine, just above turbo where the crossover pipe goes to the drivers side. Pull the line and plug it, and see what happens.

These usually fail by the actuator blowing causing a vac leak, but anything is possible! My Volvo blew immense clouds of inky smoke and made funny rattling noises when the EGR stuck open (faulty valve, nothing wrong with the vac system). I plated it off, new one was $400!
