I'll try this again...

I asked this question earlier with no replies...
What temperature does the car increase its idle speed to 1000 rpm? Mine has done it once this year, and it was at around 14C. I started it up this morning, the thermometer read 7.5C and it was still at 750RPM... I suspect something's wrong with it.

What actually makes the speed increase? And how do I adjust the idle speed on my car? I can't find anything about it for the 601 engine.

If the cold weather idle thing is broken, how hard is it to fix? This is a very vital function for this car, as it sits outside all the time and I drive it in the mornings.

hmmm

14C= 57F = not very cold

even 7 is not really that cold.

If you have the correct oil (synthetic and 0- or 5- weight), and good fuel, and good battery/glow plugs you shouldn't have any problems starting.

It never gets below 10C here, so I can't help any more than that, as both my 603 and 617 always idle at +-650rpm.

Are you sure that the idle speed is really a problem?

190D22...

If I interpret your post correctly, you said that only once it did idle at 1000 rpm when it was 14c.

Now, it seems to idle at 750 rpm at 7c.

Have you owned this car through a season where the temperature was regularly low enough to cause increased idle? I haven't, although on start up, there is a brief period where rpm's are higher than normal idle. Usually lasts no more than 5 to 10 seconds.

If this was an isolated incident, then I believe it wasn't the temperature that caused idle increase.

I looked through all the literature I have (MB CD-Rom, plus Peter Russek Manual for 190D) and couldn't find anything that offers specs on this topic.

on the 84 190 there is a vacuum idle control on the back of the fuel pump which increases the idle at low temperatures. A bad or old vacuum pump will not generally have adequate pull when you start up to increase the idle. With a good vacuum pump, the idle goes up to about 900-1000 when it is close to freezing (0C) or thereabouts. In my car, it goes back to the 700's within a couple of blocks.

I do not know what is on the later cars which have more sophisticated idle control, but this is how an 84 190 operates.

Hope this helps.

Thank you!! Maybe it's a bad vacuum line perhaps? I had it last winter and it started and idled at 1000 rpm every day.

I have no problems with the vacuum system, except I think it takes it a little too long to turn off the defrost vents on the ACC. But one leaky line would throw off the whole system... It shuts off fine.

Check the vac pump output first -- I think you have a separate set of lines for the vac operated stuff and the brake booster.

Later models have electronic idle speed control -- if yours does, it will have two sets of wires plugged into the IP.

If the defrost vents are slow to operate, you may very well have a vac leak large enough to cause trouble. Doesn't require much vac for the shutoff to work -- mine shut off fine with a new shuttoff, but the AC blew up the windshield the vac was so low!

Nate, it was 5C this morning and the idle never went above 750-800rpms. Come to think about it, it never idled above 1000rpms. My 155K Mi (I KNOW - it should have been 150K mi) service is coming up this Monday. I'll ask about it.
