oil pressure

Just changed the oil on my 300D. Prior to the oil change and since I got the car the idle pressure has been at about the 1 1/2 mark. Now the pressure sits just over 2. This is my 3rd oil change and don't think I did anything different. Any thoughts.

Probably not a big deal. Quite a few things will affect the pressure you see at idle. Mine is pegged out cold, but will drop to 2 to 2.5 after it warms up. I adjusted the valves a few weeks ago and it changed some after, because I took the throttle linkage apart and the idle speed probably changed slightly. The colder fall weather has made a difference in the idle speed, as well. Also, oil viscosity can change this. When I changed from dino oil to synthetic, the idle pressure dropped some due to the thinner nature of the synthetic oil. Bottom line here is...small changes in the pressure at idle are meaningless.

Your oil pressure will drop as the oil filter gets dirty and the oil starts to get old and thicken up with engine cooties. On my old Audi, the odometer died years ago, so never know when it is due for an oil change. So I just watch the oil pressure gage. When it drops below 2 bar at idle when hot, I change the oil & filter. Then the pressure is great for what I estimate to be another 3,000 to 4,000 miles. It's worked for the past 6 years, with exactly the same results everytime.

Now Rick, Don't that border on the guy who gets around to adding oil when he hears the lifters rattling on his old Maver-wreck?
Seems I recall a few of those fellows in my gas station attendent days.

Yeh! Kinda like the old volkswagon I had. It had the optional "chage-o-matic" oil system. It leaked so much, all I ever did was add a quart abouit once a week!
If the audi was a car that was REAL valuable, I'd do something more about it. But as old as it is, if it blows up tomorrow (not likely!) I have more than gotten my money's worth out of it. But those old Audi 5-cylinder engines are nearly indestructable. They far out live the electrical system!:p

I say we turn this into another oil thread. Yes, I have a tranny swap coming up this weekend and I think a diversion would do nicely. So tell me, should I change now to synthetic oil, or wait until after a full moon?
