jay123 , interesting link there ,, I notice the author prefaces much of what he says with ; "In my opinion " or " I believe" .
Very wordy , but sounds very untechnical . (is that a word?) Sure is lots to think about though.

synthetic debate
to further confuse things, I talked to Ron, who advised that he tried synthetic in two different cars and that it " cleaned 'em out" to the point that they both started using oil.
He said upon switching back, they stopped.I don't know what brand he used. |

As the past and present owner of a series of English cars I consider myself a bit of an expert on oil leaks (unfortunately). I've used synthetic oil and dino oil in almost all of them at one time or another. Modern synthetics no longer cause gaskets to shrink and start leaks. However, if you already have a leak synthetic will sometimes leak more because, except where the oil is under pressure, the bulk of the leaking around non moving parts tends to happen when the engine is cold. As the surfaces cool they contract making it easier to leak. Dino oil tends to be stiffer (more viscous) when it's cold and doesn't leak as much as synthethics that remain fairly thin when cold. On my English cars I found I lost less oil with dino oil, even if I'd gone from dino to syn and back to dino. Most of the oil I lost was with a cold car on my garage floor or on undercarriage where it dripped off later. To me the oil leakage with synthethics is a by product of the lower viscosity when cold. For my money I use synthethics in the cars I drive everyday because the startup protection is worth it. For my English sieves I use dino oil because they get started infrequently and the cost benefit doesn't make sense. As the saying goes, you pays your money and makes your choice.
