diesel reluctancy to start after it sits for a two months?

I am off at school without my mercedes and i finally talked my parents into going to start it up and taking it for a drive(they both have much nicer cars so there is no real reason they would rather take mine anywhere). My dad said that it started, but didn't feel like it was hitting on all cylinders for about a minute, he then backed it out, it started getting smoother and then died. He then said it took forever to get her to fire up again after that, and it idled very roughly for about two minutes and was smoking a fair amount(did not mention color) and them smoothed out, and ran perfectly for the half hour or so they had it out(the took it for a ride along the beach, it has a nice big sunroof and big windows ). Should i be concerned about anything? I figured it'd take much longer than a couple months to cause her any hesitation starting....... I know i have leaky injector lines(lines that run from injector to injector) but that is the only fuel problem i have that i am aware of. Does this sound normal and okay to everyone?? This car must last me at least 2-3 more years so i'm a little concerned about reluctancy to start especially during the winter. I have no place to plug in for a block heater and it will probably get down to the thirties or so(stop laughing you northerners ) thanks in advance guys,
R

In the 30s... no block heater is needed. Block heater is for 10 degrees all the time. Just replace those return injector lines and make sure you've got all working glow plugs.

Check the suction line from the tank to the IP and the priming pump. Leaks here won't show up very well -- the fuel will siphon back into the tank.

Best to run the glow plugs twice before attempting to start after sitting, and I would recommend that the car be run at least once a month rather than sitting -- if the battery goes down, it will start hard.

Lots of smoke would also indicate a bad glow plug or two. And make sure Pop ran the glowplugs long enough.....!

I asked him how long he ran the plugs for, he said he cycled them twice and on the second cycling let it sit for 10 secs after the light went out. He said the same thing about the fuel, that it seemd as if it ran out of what was already in the fuel filter/injectors etc and had to draw new fuel from the tank. So where exactly do i need to check for these leaks? is it simple/cheap? Also, once the car is run frequently again it should not even be a problem right? thanks once again

The line is between the steel line from the tank and the IP. The rubber can go bad under the braided cover. Will have fuel on it if bad, may also be able to hear air being sucked in when the hand pump is operated. Replace with standard fuel line -- you may have to cut the old one off and use a clamp on the part the screws into the lift pump, I don't know what they look like on the 617.

if the hand pump is the old type and dumps fuel all over you when you work it, replace it. This has cured many a hard start problem.

You should run some diesel purge or redline in it when you get home for Thanksgiving, too.

Say hello to my niece, or at least wave at her next halftime -- she plays flute in the marching band at FSU.

Replace those leaking injector return lines! This is a common problem on most diesel engines which use return lines at the injectors. If it leaks fuel, the it can permit air in while sitting. Therefore fuel drains back to the tank. Jeff

Ryan:

Replace the hand pump with the new type. Just pushes down, no need to unscrew it. Works better, and no diesel fuel on your hands.

Your starting problem is most likely the fuel leaking back into the tank from the bad hand pump.

Replace the overflow lines, too -- you will notice the increase in milage!
