81 300 D with the transmission blues
Guys, I need your help. I have an 81 300D that I have owned for a little over 3 years. In that time I have replaced the motor, rear driveline parts and now the transmission is giving up the ghost. I have only 2 forward gears now, first and second on a automatic equipped car. So here is the question I have, I bought a 240 D parts car with a weak engine, no compression. The car is a four speed manual shift that is complete. I found another transmission that has the following numbers on the side of the case R 116 271 03 012 that is from a 1980 300 SD. Is this other automatic interchangeable in the 300 D chassis? Looks very similar but from experience looks aren't everything. So is this a legit swap or would you change the car to a four speed? I can do this cheaper than I could have the trans rebuilt, so that is the issue stay automatic or take a chance on this other automatic.
Thanks, Vann |

Vann - welcome aboard.
I would suggest going with the manual transmission. Your 300D is a non-turbo and the 300SD is a turbo engine. I think there is a difference in the transmissions but am not absolutely sure about it. If/when you do the swap to the manual I would like to come by and take a look when you are about 1/2 way through it. Also, I may be interested in a couple/few parts off of the 240D. Email me.
