Tips for Changing Glowplugs on OM603

I recall viewing a similar topic last year, but my search didn't return any such results.

My dash glowplug light no longer comes on. I can hear the relay click off after 45-60 sec of having the key turned on. The strip fuse shows continutity. Also, the car doesn't seem to start hard at 40 degrees.

I still need to check the glow plug resistance and dash bulb, but need to take a proactive approach. I know the glowplugs on the 603 is different than on a 617. More difficult maybe? In case the glowplug(s) need replaced, I'd appreciate any comments from someone who has done this.

thanks in advance.

While you may not actually need to change them all, the following thread shows pictures of my method of getting all the glow plugs changed at once:

What To Do?

An advantage of this method is getting the opportunity to clean out all the accumulated gunk in the intake manifold - spewed in there over the years by the infamous EGR valve.

I have changed the glow plugs on my '87 300SDL without having to remove the crossover pipe or the intake manifold. The key is to use a 1/4 inch drive extensions on your rachets with a universal joint at the socket. You will need find where the socket wrench fits beneath the intake manifold but it can be done. I had different sizes of extensions to perform the changes.

When I replaced mine I removed the intake manifold, cross over pipe and injector lines. It made it a piece of cake.

It is possible to replace them with the intake in place, but you must have the proper (1/4-inch drive & deep socket) tools, and it's NOT easy. I recommend pulling the intake off, changing the plugs, cleaning the intake, replacing the intake gaskets (which ALWAYS leak around the #2 runner), and also replacing the IP vacuum shutoff if it is original (this job takes 5 minutes with the intake off and almost 2 hours otherwise.) Photos of the job on my sister's car are here:

(I also tore off the ALDA tamper seal and turned it 1 turn CCW to improve off-idle performance.)

Regards,
