GSXR and Old Deis, having quoted the manual and listed the page number previously in this thread to no avail I have officially given up on RMT and Larry....

Yep, that's why I posted the link to the real PDF.

Perhaps they're confused with the OM60x engine, which has a non-detent tensioner that is spring loaded & oil pressure only? I dunno... I just don't like leaving inaccurate information in the archives where it could cause someone else problems in the future. Oh well...

GSXR, I feel exactly the same way and appreciate you staying in the fray to try to get it corrected...the fact that yall were staying the course was what allowed me to smart off about quiting...

Don't think that you and Larry are not appreciated in this. Some of the best advise has come from Larry and yourself.

Okay, I now think I know what gives here.

After I got home last night, I changed and went to the shop. I found the tensioner from my 240D engine in a parts bucket, where it is patiently awaiting it's time to find it's way back into an engine to be brought back from the dead.

THAT tensioner is MOST DEFINITELY NOT a ratcheting tensioner and NOT made like the one in the .pdf.

I went inside and found a parts book. The tensioner for the '77 to '81, 616 and 617 engines are DIFFERENT part numbers and different line drawings from that of a later model 617 engine.

I have never had a turbo 617 engine apart any further than the valve cover for valve adjustment.

I was prepared to eat crow on this. I do not claim to have all the answers, far from it. I have learned more from this forum than I have ever managed to contribute. But....... I don't feel that I have to eat much crow here. I was correct in that the 616 and 617's that I have taken apart do NOT have a ratcheting tensioner. So, I guess we were both correct to some degree.

Where I was INCORRECT was assuming that the late 616 and 617 engines had the same tensioner.

There was incorrect information from two sides. I was incorrect in assuming that all 616's and 617's had the same tensioner, but you guys made the same assumptions.

We ALL made the incorrect assumptions that all these engines have the same tensioner.

So now that you've hammered it home, I will eat however much crow you wish, as long as you take one bite with me.

I hope we're all still friends,

While you are in there doing the chain, do replace the guides. My banana guide was quite grooved. Go ahead and pull the tensioner and inspect it, making sure the little spring clip detent is intact and working. Just takes one nut and two bolts. Drain the cooling system and pull the thermostat housing. Now, while it is off, REPLACE the little two inch piece of radiator hose. Mine looked like..... well it looked bad! I'm still putting my '83 300D back together-had to pick up the little hose! Plus, no time to work on cars. I bought the tool from some place out west. Cost just under $200 including shipping (ouch), but I have another double row chain to do real soon on wife's car. Her 190E has only about 170k, but I think it is original chain. Man, is it loose. Ya know, this is my daughters car, but I really miss driving it. Of course daughter would LOVE to swap me her 300D for my 560SEL. My daughter driving a 560 to school everyday-WRONG.

Remember, I was not the only one that assumed that the same tensioner was used in ALL 616 and 617 engines. I expect a little sharing hear.

I am not, however, expecting things to be fair. A Fair is where you go to ride the Merry Go Round, show your prize Heifer and eat Corn Dogs.

Have a great day,

AGAIN. Others here ASSUMED that all the tensioners on the 616/617 were the same!

Have a great day,

That's right, it was more than just Larry, there's a lot of folks out there who got their early/late technicalities messed up. Never meant to pick on Larry specifically!
