Enrique will be about 45 miles from Covina - a 45 minute commute, if not driven to during rush hour. Rush hour would double or triple the time.

However, it can't be too difficult for a Mercedes Service and Repair facility to do a competent PPI.

I'd take the owner up on his offer to give you the numbers of a few shops in the area, and pick one that you feel comfortable with.

I'd like to comment because this car looks like mine! I have a $3000 custom sound system with built-in sub as well as $2500 chromed 17" MB rims and this one looks completely stock. I know mine would be a steal at $7000 compared to what is out there for $7-10K, so this one is a steal at $4K. Don't be afraid of the mileage, a well maintained diesel will have only minor cosmetic things wrong at this age. The electricals and drivetrain mechanicals should be in fine shape if this car has been babied the way mine has....good luck!

BTW, one thought on the checkout.....

One of my favorite shops is near Covina, have someone go see Sam at Startech Motors. He has maintained my Mercedes for several years! Here's the contact info.

Not sure what's up with my url paste, but Startech is in Rowland Heights, Ca.

Thanks for the tip----Sam will be checking it out on Thursday. He does not do a compression check, though. I'm not worried about high miles, but rather the low miles....probably hasn't had too many things replaced with that mileage. But, compared to my options over here in Honolulu, that thing is GREAT.

My dad went to pick up car this morning to have PPI, and was all set to give seller 4k as we had agreed upon. Seller said now that he would not end the auction unless price was 4500. I have to put a limit somewhere and 4000 was pushing the budget, especially when extra shipping would be 900. Oh well, I'll be keeping an eye on the auction, and hoping it doesn't go for over 4. Dissapointed, yet still optimistic...Aloha

1st,

If Sam thought this car was good and your Dad liked it, you should buy it. Sam thinks my car is an exceptional vehicle and I wouldn't want to sell it to you for $4500. I'd consider that giving it away.....you should grab a good one while you can. I posted about the value of these cars and got responses from a couple of people saying the diesel is only worth what it's worth!

Well, I know what is on the road and commands the KKB value of $2-3K which they are willing to pay. My car is major league compared to those...I've got to say that the pictures of your car seemed to show a clean car. Mine has only a door ding from a large SUV and inside the glove compartment door handle is starting to fail, I've repaired it but I think in time it will need to be replaced. Apart from that my car is perfect, plus I have lots of upgrades. The people in the South Cal. GTG saw the condition of my other two cars and they wouldn't be surprised that this 17yr old car of mine is like new.

I'm telling you all this because I REALLY think these cars are worth double or more what KKB says they are, so pay a premieum if the car is clean. Not many are........

Well Sam didn't even look at it. We had agreed upon 4000 if PPI went ok, and then seller said 4500. I couldn't commit to that. Plus my dad is flying to Hawaii tomorrow morning so it had to be done today if it was going to happen. My only other choice is to bid on it contingent on a solid PPI. There is a day left and the price is at 3375....We will see what happens. Even if the car was mint, at 4500 plus 900 shipping, plus tax and registration because it would be bought first by my father, I would be looking at 6 grand +. Even a mint car is going to require some upfront repairs. I could buy a decent one that I've driven over here for 1600 and drop another 1200 for new ac plus another 2000 for whatever and still be at 4800. This one I'm talking about shows dealer service up to 1998 with 85,000 miles...odometer now shows 120k. Plus it's an 85... a few years newer than the 82 for 6k! I'll keep you all posted, but my girlfriend is up to you know where with all my looking
Aloha

Well, definitely stay within your budget!

My comments were directed at people who could afford to pay $8-10K for a car and would only grousingly be willing to pay $4k for a mint 85 300D.

I wish you the best luck, paying 2-3K for an older w123 is a smart move, just don't settle for a non-turbo. If you're young, you'll regret not having the extra uumph!

Hey 1st,

I was curious and watched the bidding close, it was me.....just kidding!

You know I reread the description and it said cracks were appearing on the dashboard and there were some paint flaws. Well, that means less than mint to me, it's probably good you didn't overpay for that one.....

Too bad you can't go 9-10K. My girlfriend just bought a 99 Honda Civc EX for $9500 and it's a nice car but please, no safety or style points....just economy!
I'd miss parting with my ride for that much, but at least I'd know that it was closer to it's real value. And, in your case it would be going to someone who wants a classic...
