If your wagon has self-leveling suspension (look for the fluid canister) then you do have the pump attached to the head.

All TDs had the self leveling system, it was standard equipment. Mercedes designed the car to haul heavy loads, and of course heavy loads weight down the back end. So when Mercedes came out with the TD in 1978, it came standard with the leveling sys. The turbo engine was introduced on the TDs model year 1981. In '82 they put it on the W123 sedans.

The first year of the TD was 1979, and I belive some euro wagons did not have the hydropneumatic suspension.

Correct !!! I have seen many a 300TD wagon w/o the self-leveling system from the factory. All of them were pre-1980 fpr some fact. At first, I was under that same impression that ALL of them came with it.
