Yea, the 240D gets better mpg. But to be fair, it is faster, with more than double the horsepower . It leaks oil but not that bad. A quart every 1000 miles. The SUV was on campus before I got the 240D, it will just blend into the background, which is fine. And the 240D will get to sit in the garage where my dad can wax it and tinker with it. He loves the car, just as much as I do, and has even considered giving me his C230 so he can drive the diesel. That though lasted about 2 seconds though when he relized he can't talk on the cell phone and safely shift at the same time. Bad yes, [to talk on the cell and drive, even w/ an auto] but he has been doing it since 1982 and has yet have any cell phone related incident

well, Tank, since I'm making $65K a year cleaning up these chemicals, I have love-hate relationship/opinion about them . Yes, they pollute, they are harmful, they cause all kinds of health problems, but they paid for my cars, home, and will pay kid's education. hmmmm.... lemmie think about it...
Seriously, as long as we maintain sense of proportion, we'llbe OK. If it wasn't for people screaming about Love Canal in the 70's, who knows what we would be drinking in our water today?

I think that it is probably a mute point from an overview ,according to the experts we have about 35 years of oil left in the world today. Maybe we can find a better pollutant to take us to the mall by then..........

Veg OIL

Dont fret about the end of the oil supply, we always have the fryer dregs!

By the way ask the greenies what color their gas pump is when compared to the diesel pump!

Heh Heh.

William, in 1991 I took a petrology class at University of Delaware. Dr. Benson (now a head of the Delaware Geological Survey) told us we have about...35-40 years of petroleum left. That's not counting reserves in shale that will last another 100 years. So, I'll let my son worry about it...

BJ300SDL,

Not looking to make trouble, but I don't feel so bad about my '87 300 SDL since I read your post earlier in this thread. Got her this past spring out of FL @ 200K for $4500 even. Did I steal it or did you maybe pay a bit much?

I love this topic , Most of the time when people see a little puff or two of black smoke they panic. I admit my 240 smokes a little but try explaining the newer diesel technology to them. I have helped someone by telling them all about the vw tdi great milage etc, great for commuting, it paid off they bought one. This car gets three to four times the mpg they were getting . My friend has a dodge diesel and I think its great . I know a lot of people with these and other diesels. We always are baffeled why diesel does not catch on. It will sooner than later as fuel cells are expensive for now. There are not to many diesel car offerings right now , but that will change. I have had some nice clean used pickups that I have maintained in really nice conditon but not in diesel, I will never go back to gas, There are a lot more used diesel pickups around now than I have ever seen . sorry to get off course here but It all comes down to diesel diesel diesel, so spread the word . Hans.

This whole thread is just more evidence that environment extremists think with their emotions instead of their brains.

Have a great day,

My take on this is totally different. Nevermind the environmental issues, that is a completely different discussion. My question is: What right do these idiots have TOUCHING your car? Its not theirs and they have no right putting notes, stickers or anything else on it. I have been this route, my solution was not elegant but effective..... 4yrs ago, downtown Austin, TX my wife is in a bookstore and I am wandering around waiting for her. I see this kid with a backpack messing around with the back of my truck. I was about 50yards away so I ran up to him before he saw me and confronted him. He had just finished putting a "gas guzzler" sticker on the truck. He refused to peel it off and was ranting about the environment, etc. I sorta lost it and "pimp slapped" him. Knocked him right on his butt. He started crying and ran off only to return with a cop. Now the cop wants to know what happened so he listens to the story and decides that he can't do anything as there were no witnesses forthcoming and the stories are conflicting. The kid then starts ranting at the cop about how they always side with "rednecks" like me. Eventually the kid left, the cop looks at me leans close and says "next time don't hit him so hard, have a nice day" Yeah I got lucky but it was fun and that kid will think twice about doing that again. I don't recommend this approach but I can't stand the idea that someone else considers my property for his use as well. Fly your flags, yell all you want but keeps the paws off my ride! RT

rw,

Way to go! Part of the problem is that there aren't as many people raised to respect others property as there used to be.

I heard on the radio that there is someone making money by consulting to the college athletes that are interviewing for pro athletic jobs. The consultant coaches them by telling them to dress nicely for the interviews, say please and thank you and to write a thank you note. Helloooooooooo! Did their Mama's not teach them this?

No one has any business whatsoever even touching your vehicle, much less putting a sticker on it. If more people handled the situation like you, it would most definitely curb a lot of this crap.

Good work,

rwthomas1,

That is the funniest and most inspiring story I've heard lately! That little whiner will think twice before he vandalizes someone else's property, won't he?! Who says violence is never the answer?! Worked for you, didn't it! Don't let anyone make you feel bad about it...the kid deserved it. The fact that the cop said what he did is a credit to that gentleman, and to his department.

Mike

Ignorance gone to seed!!!

Many of these ignorant liberals are just regurgitating the BS they are learning at these so called institutes of higher learning.

The problem is that liberals have no problem imposing their values on anyone, while preaching tolerance to all people of their alternative lifestyles.

Err?... were we talking about cars?...

Markm...

This was the funniest thing I have heard all week!!!

"The funniest time was when I was driving through the beautiful town of Camden Maine (very affluent, sea-captains mansions, schooners in the harbor, upscale boutiques, etc.)....I noticed a guy with black boots, black jeans, black leather vest, shaven head (remember the "skin-heads") ...giving me the "Hitler/Nazi Salute" as I drove by!"

Not so funny

Sorry but I don't think it's so funny that you slapped the kid. Although he sounds like a punk, I don't think that resorting to violence is particularly funny.

I, for one, got an old Mercedes Diesel in part for environmental reasons. As stated previously, making new cars constibutes lots of polution and uses lots of resources. Also, I learned that diesels get better gas mileage, and they can be converted to veg oil of bio diesel. Whether you believe in the green house effect or not, I sure that all of us agree that the less toxic fumes we breath the longer we'll live.

Just think, if more people drove diesels run on American grown soya bio-diesel, we would be handing less of our dollars to Middle Eastern kings and dictators and more money would be going to American farmers. I think that the less we have to depend on the corrupt regimes of countries like Saudi, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, etc. the better off we'll be.

I personally applaud the work of enviromentalists and tree huggers! I love our beautifull country and want to see it remain beautifull.

But, I think that the people who were putting stickers on your car were basically ignorant (and apparently spoiled) kids that could have benefitted from some education about diesels and their benefits.

Have a nice day
