1984 300SD alternator upgrade? EDIT: DONE DEAL

55 amps. may have been OK in 1984, but I'd really like a bit more capacity for the full elect. load when stuck around town with all systems on.

I know about the 300E alternator and charging harness upgrade; but has anyone swapped in an 80 amp. alternator from 500, 560 series 126 chassis to a 300SD. I know about Ultranator and one wire Delco (not what I want).

The electrical connection is easily handled, but even though I've had the AL69X (80 amp.) and the AL117X (55 amp.) in my hands, I've never had them at the same time, side by side to compare. Will the higher capacity alt. physically mount up with 300SD stock bracket and cradle? What have others done, that's easy.

Thanks, Bruce

I am interested in this mod as well, as my alternator wireing connection is corroded beyond recognition.
I have rigged a temp fix, but am in need of the harness that goes from the fender to the alternator. A good replacement would be to do what you are considering, the main issue would be the brackets and pulleys though. I guess anything can be fabricated with time and patience.
Thanks,
Adam Bush

Charging harness for the 55 amp. AL117X is part # 126-540-96-34. The harness for the 80 amp. alt. can be hand made easily or use part #126-540-04-08. All depends on the physical fit of the 80 amp. to the 300SD pulleys and brackets. Do you want to try the swap first and I'll learn from your experience?

Swapped in a Bosch rebuilt 80 amp. AL69X (from the 500, 560's) in place of the 55 amp. AL117X. At first blush it looks too big to fit, but does. It is a tight fit to the upper bracket and takes some patience on adj. bolt re-insertion (two bolts in, belt on, one bolt out, adj., second bolt in, that sort of stuff.) but quite do-able. Pulleys and belts align fine (albeit snugly). Made a custom harness (easy) with 8 gauge wire and soldered connectors. Took 1 hr. w/o counting time to fabricate harness.

The 65 amp alternator AL117X is a direct bolt on & most will make close to 70A. MB part number 007-154-37-02-88. That was used on later OM617.95_ series engines.

The 55A alternator is a AL80X, MB part number 005-154-74-02-88.
