ALDA picture - the guts
Gentleman,
I have read a few times that people wondered what the ALDA looked like inside. I tried adjusting mine and unscrewed it a little too far and pulled the screw out of the aneroid rendering it non-functional. The ALDA works 100% like the aneroid barometers in the planes that I fly. The aneroids are relaxed with no boost or higher elevation, and compress with boost which pressurizes the ALDA "box" and the plunger under the ALDA leading into the injection pump raises, thereby enrichening the amount of fuel for a given throttle setting. I broke my ALDA and am now trying to get another, but the car runs great with it completely removed. I simply covered the hole temporarily as it is not under any oil pressure, etc. Sorry about the pic size, but it would only let me post one of this size or smaller, but as you can see, it is a VERY simple gizmo. Here is the pic: |

Would you say, that from looking at it, it would have the injection pump different at sea level than at 10,000 ft with the engine idleing and no turbo boost?

I would say yes, as atmospheric pressure is very strong and the aneroids are sensitive to this pressure change which would cause them to expand thereby putting downward force on the plunger in the injection pump.

Could the diaphram be broken in such a way as to work under boost and not work to lessen fuel at high altitudes?

An aneriod is a fuel to air ratio device that limits the amount of fuel rack travel untill there is proper boost. In other words, if you step on the throttle without this device on the IP,you would get alot of black smoke untill the turbo "spools up" and pumps in enough air to match the amount of fuel being dumped in.
Also if these leak air or are not adjusted properly they can cause performance complaints.

Anaeriod barometers don't have a fluid in them, usually are metal bellows type devices. Beat the you-know-what out of a meter long mecury column......

here is a great link is you want a scientific definition. The actual definition of ANEROID though is, "without water".
